Smith+Nephew announced that its CARTIHEAL AGILI-C Cartilage Repair Implant is now commercially available in Europe, following its US introduction in 2024. The implant, composed of aragonite, a naturally occurring calcium carbonate that acts as a biphasic scaffold, is designed to repair cartilage, restore bone and relieve pain, and will be featured at the International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society Summit in Porto, Portugal, from October 8 to 10. The European rollout will begin in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, with other countries expected to follow shortly after. A multicenter randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found the implant produced higher overall Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores versus surgical standard of care at all time points out to 60 months, along with superior pain relief and functional gains over five years and no statistical difference in outcomes between patients with and without osteoarthritis. Joaquin Lasso, Smith+Nephew's SVP and GM of Sports Medicine International, said the launch brings surgeons an innovative, evidence-backed solution for cartilage repair, while Dr. Francesca de Caro of Pavia Hospital in Italy said expanding access to such technologies helps address complex cartilage and osteochondral conditions.
