Summary · why it matters

American Express said its Cards are now accepted at more than 190 million Merchant locations worldwide, an increase of approximately 20 million locations this year, with the number of Amex-accepting Merchant locations outside the U.S. more than doubling over the last four years. The company attributed the growth to key partnerships, targeted expansion in the places Card Members live, work, and travel, and continued innovation in how customers pay. Anna Marrs, Group President of Global Merchant & Network Services, said the milestone reflects decades of investment in expanding the global network, adding that American Express is focused on adding acceptance in the cities and categories where Card Members want to spend. Since 2021, the company has doubled locations in Canada, Japan, and Mexico, tripled locations across Europe including the UK and France, and quadrupled locations in Singapore, while its Cards are now accepted at an estimated 800 or more transit authorities worldwide. American Express also said average annual spending on its Cards in the U.S. is three times that of cards on other networks, and that it has been accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards in the U.S. since the end of 2019.
