Archer Aviation and Beta Technologies are partnering with Macquarie Capital to deploy standardized eVTOL charging hardware at up to 250 air taxi sites across the U.S. over the next decade. The initiative, called America’s Consortium for Electric Skyways, will use the Combined Charging Standard endorsed by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, a plug incompatible with rival Joby Aviation’s aircraft. Joby developed its own Global Electric Aviation Charging System to support its distributed battery packs and coolant exchange, features not needed by Archer and Beta. The deployments are planned for airports and vertiports in California, Texas, Florida, and New York, potentially giving Archer and Beta an early infrastructure advantage. However, long-term success for all three companies will depend more on FAA approval and business model profitability than on charging standards.
Macquarie Capital is partnering to deploy charging network, likely involving investment.

SkyDrive to Study Turning Osaka's 146 Rooftop Emergency Landing Sites into eVTOL Vertiports
SkyDrive Inc. announced it will launch a feasibility study to repurpose the 146 existing rooftop emergency landing sites in Osaka City as eVTOL vertiports, part of the Cabinet Office's Super City Initiative. The project will be conducted with partners including Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City, Osaka Metro, Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., Chodai Co. Ltd., and the Organization of Airport Facilitation, with Osaka Metro serving as leader and SkyDrive handling survey design and Civil Aeronautics Act compliance. The study will verify surrounding airspace and obstacle limitation surfaces, survey wind and noise impacts from surrounding buildings, assess floor load capacities and charging infrastructure for repurposing the sites into alternate vertiports, and draft coexistence rules with authorities including the Osaka Municipal Fire Department. The 146 rooftop sites, marked with an H and required on buildings over 100 meters tall under local fire safety regulations, are currently limited to emergency disaster relief, and securing commercial passenger transport permits for them remains a significant regulatory challenge. SkyDrive and Osaka Metro are working toward commercial launch of eVTOL services by approximately 2028 within Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City, areas designated as Super City National Strategic Special Zones.

Archer Clears U.S. Antitrust Hurdle on Boeing Units Deal
Archer Aviation said the U.S. antitrust waiting period has expired on its planned acquisition of Boeing's Wisk Aero, SkyGrid and Insitu subsidiaries, satisfying a key condition for the deal to close. The deal still requires other customary closing conditions, including further regulatory approvals that Archer says are underway, and the company continues to expect completion by the end of 2026. The acquisition would combine the three Boeing units' work in autonomy, eVTOL aircraft, unmanned aircraft systems and airspace intelligence with Archer's own aircraft and its AI foundation model, ZEE. Archer pitches the combined business as an end-to-end physical AI platform for aerospace and defense. Archer shares were down 1.23% in premarket.

BETA Launches North Carolina eIPP Flight Operations for Rural Healthcare Access
BETA Technologies has launched all-electric flight operations in North Carolina's eLIFT program under the FAA and U.S. Department of Transportation's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP. Since September 17, the company has flown its ALIA CTOL aircraft on missions including a flyover of the Wright Brothers National Memorial and simulated deliveries of essential healthcare cargo to rural medical access points, covering more than 1,300 nautical miles. Working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Metro Aviation, ECU Health and WakeMed, BETA designed the campaign to connect regional medical centers with rural and coastal communities, including routes between Raleigh Executive Jetport and Pitt-Greenville Airport. The operations use BETA's Charge Cube at Raleigh Executive Jetport, installed in 2024, with more than 15 additional charging sites in development across North Carolina. BETA is participating in seven of the eight eIPP programs selected nationwide and has already supported operational missions in Virginia, Maryland, Louisiana and Texas.

Beijing bans owning and flying recreational drones after small plane hits CITIC Tower
Beijing issued official aviation safety regulations and guidance on Sunday, September 13, banning the public from owning or keeping drones and drone parts starting November 15. Residents have until November 14 to move drones out of Beijing, and the government will run a buyback program with a maximum subsidy of 3,000 yuan, about 447 dollars, per device. The measure is one of the strictest drone controls in the world, coming after a two-seat light aircraft struck the 109-story CITIC Tower in June, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people. The crash site was only a few kilometers from the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party and the residences of senior leaders. The new rules designate all of Beijing's airspace as controlled airspace, ban all forms of recreational flying, and officials will tighten control of airspace in and around the capital within a 300-kilometer radius. Although commercial flights are not affected, aircraft must have backup tracking systems and maintain two-way communication with air traffic controllers at all times. Reports say the pilot in the CITIC Tower incident deliberately flew the plane into the building after deviating from the designated flight path, and it is highly likely he ignored contact from air traffic controllers. The aircraft also nearly collided with a commercial plane. Meanwhile, shares of companies tied to China's low-altitude aviation industry fell in trading today, September 14. Nanjing LES Information Technology dropped 2.1%, Zhejiang Wanfeng Auto Wheel fell 1.5%, and Citic Offshore Helicopter declined 1.7%.

China Declares Low-Altitude Economy a National Strategy, Opening a New Investment Arena
China has declared the low-altitude economy a national strategy under the concept of New Productive Forces. By 2026, cargo drones, agricultural drones, and flying taxis (eVTOL) will begin commercial services in several provinces, creating enormous economic value from the supply chain in airspace below 1,000 meters. Two standout case studies are EHang Holdings, the first Chinese company to receive a Type Certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for commercial eVTOL, and Sichuan Jiuzhou, a state-owned enterprise that produces radar and ADS-B systems and controls air traffic infrastructure. Both companies have strong business moats in terms of regulation and national security. While the world is focused on the EV price war, a new battleground over China's skies has opened, and the winners will be those who secure licenses and infrastructure first.
