The Ministry of Interior is accelerating the drafting of minimum technical standards to support data center operations in Thailand, particularly in the Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC. Pol. Gen. Peer Suwanchavi, Deputy Minister of Interior, chaired the first meeting of the subcommittee on spatial planning, buildings and structures for 2026 on October 6, 2026, joined by Ratthaphon Naradison, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior; Theerapat Katchamat, Director-General of the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning; Thaiwut Khankaew, Permanent Secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration; and Ekkapong Siriphan, Director of the Policy and Planning Bureau of the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, at the Ratchasri Meeting Room in the Ministry of Interior building. The meeting set the measurement of setback distance from the edge of reserve fuel storage tanks as the primary reference criterion instead of measuring from the building itself, and established a framework of exemption conditions and guidelines for accommodating existing projects located outside new town planning zones. Pol. Gen. Peer also encouraged data centers to generate their own electricity as fully as possible, especially clean energy, to reduce the burden on the main power grid and avoid increasing the gas import costs of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, which would pass the burden of electricity costs onto the public. He also set guidelines for classifying data center tiers based solely on electricity consumption as the main criterion, and instructed the secretariat to coordinate with relevant agencies to establish a joint working group to find ways to relax regulations and preserve investment opportunities from the many investors that the Board of Investment has negotiated with and that have shown interest previously.
