Microsoft CorporationBill Gates said he is extremely concerned about the labor market effects of artificial intelligence, warning of major disruption within the next two years in the white-collar space and within the next four years in both the blue- and white-collar space. In an interview with The Atlantic in August, the Microsoft co-founder told host Hanna Rosin that his tone had shifted because AI models began matching or surpassing humans at coding late last year, a threshold he called particularly significant given his own programming background. Gates said the current wave of AI should not be compared with earlier breakthroughs such as the personal computer or the internet, which he believes ultimately produced net job creation, because increasingly capable systems may eventually exceed human cognition across a broad range of tasks, especially when paired with low-cost humanoid robots. He described that as a more profound change to the economy and jobs than anything in his lifetime by a dramatic amount, while noting his warning concerns the labor-market effects becoming significant within those timeframes rather than every job disappearing. Gates also raised the idea of human reserved categories of work, such as child care, that would remain off-limits to AI and robots because of the value of human interaction.
