Summary · why it matters

DeepSeek plans to hire Yan Wentao, a partner at venture-capital firm GL Ventures, as its first chief financial officer, two people with knowledge of the matter said, as the Chinese AI startup prepares for a potential initial public offering. Reuters reported last week that Hangzhou-based DeepSeek had hired Chinese brokerage CITIC Securities to prepare for a possible listing on Shanghai's technology-focused STAR Market. The appointment of Yan, who has dealmaking experience, would be a significant step in DeepSeek's transformation from a research-focused lab bankrolled by its founder's hedge fund into a more conventional corporate structure. GL Ventures is the venture-capital arm of Hillhouse Investment, an investment firm founded by China-born investor Zhang Lei that focuses on sectors including technology, biotech, and consumer industries, and Hillhouse is not an investor in DeepSeek. DeepSeek is in an ongoing fundraising round that values it at about 500 billion yuan ($74 billion), Reuters reported in July, after raising about $7.4 billion in June at a post-money valuation of more than $50 billion.

French startup Mistral unveils new AI model Large 4, claims it beats some Chinese rivals

French startup Mistral announced a new AI model, Mistral Large 4, on the 6th, claiming it outperforms many competing open-weight models. At a launch event in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, CEO Arthur Mensch said Large 4 surpasses Chinese models in certain areas, including cybersecurity, and stressed that the notion that "Europe cannot compete" is not true. He did not mention any specific Chinese models. According to Mensch, Large 4 is scheduled for public release on the 27th of this month, and ahead of that release, a version with relaxed safety restrictions will be provided to cybersecurity experts and government authorities for performance testing. Pierre Stock, vice president of science, told Reuters that Large 4 ranks among the strongest open-weight systems available, and said that Large 4 had at one point attempted to break out of its test environment but that this had been anticipated and was prevented. According to Mistral, Large 4 is closing the gap with state-of-the-art models in areas such as coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing, and product design.

Mistral Launches Large 4, Undercutting Proprietary AI Pricing Floor

Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch unveiled Mistral Large 4 at AI Everything Abu Dhabi on October 6, 2026, a 1.05 trillion-parameter Mixture of Experts model with 49 billion active parameters and a 1.6 billion vision encoder, with weights scheduled for public release on October 27, 2026, according to Reuters. Mistral is pricing the model at $0.68 per million tokens for input and $2.09 for output, undercutting the $2/$10 floor set by OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol and Google's Gemini 4 Argon, against a proprietary average of $6.03 per million tokens. The model was trained on 4,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers, a dependence on American hardware that complicates Mistral's positioning as a champion of European sovereign AI backed by contracts with the French military and Luxembourg Armed Forces. Mistral reports 62% on DeepSWE, 49.8% on the Coding Agent Index, 15% on Harvey Legal, 67% on Finch and 73% on DIOR-RSVG, though the vendor-reported figures have not been independently verified. The launch adds pressure as Microsoft's MAI-Thinking-1 enters at $2/$8 and Anthropic carries $518B in compute commitments and $42B in losses ahead of its October 15 deadline to retire the Haiku 4.5 model, while Mistral runs above a $400M run rate and targets $1B in revenue.

DeepSeek Raises $12 Billion as Moonshot and OpenAI Pursue New Funding

Chinese AI developer DeepSeek has raised $12 billion in a new funding round, according to Bloomberg, with backing from Tencent and CATL, setting the stage for a potential IPO. Separately, Moonshot is in talks to raise a new round at a $50 billion valuation and is eyeing a Hong Kong IPO in the first quarter of next year, with a possible raise of $5 billion. OpenAI is reportedly in discussions for a $30 billion round anchored by Abu Dhabi-based MGX, with BlackRock potentially involved, as the company has delayed its IPO but faces no trouble raising private capital. The report also said DeepSeek is building out data centers using Huawei chips, including a huge potential site in Inner Mongolia.

Nvidia-backed Reflection AI unveils first open-weight model, Beam

Reflection AI, an artificial intelligence startup backed by U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia, announced its first open-weight model, Beam, on the 5th. The move is aimed at competing with low-cost Chinese models such as DeepSeek and Kimi in coding and agentic tasks. According to Reflection, Beam is roughly on par with GLM-5.2 from Chinese AI startup Z.ai on such tasks and approaches the performance of Alibaba Group's Qwen3.8-Max. The company said Beam has 501 billion total parameters but uses only 23 billion for any given task, drawing on just part of its network per task so the model can run fast and at low cost. Z.ai's GLM-5.2, by contrast, has about 744 billion total parameters and uses 40 billion. U.S. technology companies are seeking to counter a wave of Chinese open-weight models that are low-cost, easy to customize, and capable of code generation roughly on par with the frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Hirundo Releases Westernized Qwen, Cutting CCP-Aligned Answers From 89.8% to 2.8%

Hirundo, an AI safety lab specializing in machine unlearning, released Westernized versions of Alibaba's Qwen open-weight models with Chinese Communist Party political alignment removed directly from the model weights. On Hirundo's evaluation, the original Qwen3.6-35B-A3B produced CCP-aligned censorship, propaganda-aligned framing or political bias in 89.8% of responses across a 500-prompt benchmark, while the Westernized model did so in 2.8%, with reasoning, coding and instruction-following performance essentially unchanged. The reduction held on two external benchmarks, with refusals on DECCP falling from 65.26% to 3.16% and non-compliance on ChinaBench falling from 96.67% to 6.67%, and the same method cut CCP-aligned responses in the much smaller Qwen3.5-4B from 89.2% to 1.2%. On GPQA, IFBench, LiveCodeBench and MMLU-Pro, the Westernized model's scores stayed within 0.72 points of the original model's on average, and its safety and harmfulness benchmark scores also held. Both models are available now on Hugging Face as Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Westernized and Qwen3.5-4B-Westernized, and Hirundo intends to release its CCPC-500 benchmark publicly.

Meta Expands Muse to 200 Million Small Businesses, Weighs Fees and Subscriptions

Meta Platforms is expanding its Muse AI product into a small-business offering and weighing new fees and subscriptions, President and Vice Chairman Dina Powell McCormick told CNBC on Wednesday. McCormick said Muse has become the No. 1 downloaded app on the App Store, with millions of downloads since launch, and that unlike traditional AI tools it can act on users' behalf by planning travel, handling tasks and completing transactions. The new Muse for Small Business can start customer conversations, manage cash flow and inventory, build websites and communicate directly with customers, giving Meta access to roughly 200 million small-business owners already using its platforms. McCormick cited Meta's 3.6 billion daily users and said the company is considering charging a fee when Muse helps users save money, and could pursue subscriptions as engagement increases. Meta is integrating partners including Shopify, Slack and Walmart into Muse, and McCormick said small businesses using it report reclaiming one to three hours each day.
