Dolby LaboratoriesAcquires video compression portfolio with 250 patents, strengthening its technology position.

Dolby Laboratories has acquired a video-compression technology portfolio developed by Florida Atlantic University researchers in partnership with OP Solutions. The portfolio includes 683 intellectual property assets, among them 250 granted patents worldwide and 73 United States patents, with technology that contributed to the Versatile Video Coding standard known as H.266. Sixteen U.S. patents from the collaboration have been declared essential to the VVC standard and are licensed through the Access Advance VVC patent pool. The research was led by FAU professors Hari Kalva, Borko Furht, and Velibor Adzic, with Kalva and Furht named as inventors on all 250 granted patents. Dolby acquired the portfolio from OP Solutions, which held the patent rights following assignment from FAU.
