The Television Academy, which organizes the Emmy Awards, the highest honor in American television, announced on the 6th that Amazon.com's video streaming service Prime Video has won the rights to stream the awards ceremony and related programming. The deal runs for six years, with exclusive streaming beginning with next September's ceremony. Viewing is expected to be possible in countries around the world, even for those who are not paying subscribers. Until now, the ceremony had been broadcast on a rotating basis by the four major networks, including ABC and CBS. The Academy Awards ceremony, the film industry's biggest event, has also been televised by ABC since 1976, but from 2029 it will be streamed exclusively on YouTube. The Television Academy emphasized in a statement that the television industry has become more global than ever, and that the Emmys should be a celebration that people around the world can share.
