Lean hog futures prices fell despite higher cash prices, with slaughter below year-ago levels and declining open interest.
Lean hog futures settled Monday with contracts down 80 cents to $1.20, while the CME Lean Hog Index rose 34 cents to $92.69 on July 9. USDA's national base hog price gained 48 cents to $98.78, and the pork carcass cutout value added 21 cents to $101.55, with only rib and ham primals higher. Federally inspected hog slaughter reached 464,000 head, up 1,000 from the prior Monday but 2,705 below the same week last year. Open interest declined by 1,868 contracts.
