Lean hog futures closed mixed on Friday, with contracts ranging from 85 cents higher to 67 cents lower, while the pork carcass cutout value rose $2.53 to $101.34. The August contract gained 25 cents for the week, settling at $99.000, and the USDA national base hog price increased $1.25 to $98.30. The CME Lean Hog Index edged up 37 cents to $92.35, and all primal cuts were higher, led by a $8.45 surge in bellies. Managed money expanded its net short position by 1,635 contracts to 29,002 contracts in the week ended July 7, according to CFTC data. Federally inspected hog slaughter reached an estimated 2.369 million head this week, up 395,000 from the holiday-shortened prior week and 29,253 above the same week last year.
