Retail rice prices fell below 3,500 yen for the first time in 1.5 years, indicating lower demand or increased supply, which is negative for rice futures.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced on the 10th that the average price of 5 kilograms of rice sold at around 1,000 supermarkets nationwide between June 29 and July 5 was 3,458 yen, down 96 yen from the previous week. This marks the second consecutive week of decline, and the price has fallen below 3,500 yen for the first time in a year and a half, since the final week of December 2024. The average price of branded rice, which accounted for 78 percent of sales volume, fell 87 yen from the previous week to 3,521 yen, while blended rice dropped 106 yen to 3,237 yen.
