Sonic Automotive announced on August 27 that it acquired Porsche Walnut Creek, adding a sixth Porsche store to its lineup and deepening its footprint in one of the country's priciest car markets. The dealership, previously run by Fletcher Jones Automotive Group and serving the Bay Area community since 2006, slots into a California portfolio that already spans BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, EchoPark and Harley-Davidson. The deal lands less than a month after Sonic posted its best second quarter on record, with revenue of $3.9 billion, up 8% year over year, gross profit of an all-time high $616.2 million, and reported net income up 226% to $57.4 million, or $1.79 per diluted share. Beneath those headline figures, adjusted net income fell 23% to $58.3 million and adjusted earnings per share dropped 17% to $1.82, while EchoPark segment income fell 38% to $7.2 million even as retail unit sales rose 17% to 19,601. Sonic, which holds about $676 million in total available liquidity and pays a quarterly dividend of $0.41 per share, is betting that luxury and Powersports expansion can outrun margin pressure that President Jeff Dyke attributed in part to a challenging consumer affordability backdrop.
