About 1,783 wstETH Drained on Base, Losses Top $6 Million, PeckShield Says
Blockchain security firm PeckShield reported on October 4 that roughly 1,783 wstETH was drained on Base, Ethereum's layer-2 network. The losses amount to about $6 million, or roughly 960 million yen. According to Blockaid, which detected the attack, the victim was a vault used to store and manage crypto assets; a new contract was added to the whitelist that restricts who can use the vault's functions, and aBaswstETH was borrowed from the vault before the tokens were moved to a separate attacker-controlled contract. aBaswstETH is a deposit receipt showing that wstETH, an asset tied to Ethereum staking, was deposited with the lending service Aave. Blockaid initially reported that about $2.02 million was drained in roughly four transactions, but later updated the loss figure to more than $6 million in the same post thread. In a July 28 report, the company said hacking losses in the first half of 2026 exceeded $1 billion, with the number of confirmed attacks hitting a record high.
