RBA hikes to 15-year high as inflation hits 4% and private credit cracks

  • RBA raises rates to 4.60%, a 15-year high The RBA lifted the cash rate to 4.60% and kept the door open to more, as inflation hit 4% on fuel and housing costs. Higher borrowing costs pressure property, retail and indebted households, while supporting the Aussie dollar and bank margins.

This is the dominant force moving Australian markets this period, affecting every sector.

  • Metrics halts redemptions as auditor questions accounts Metrics Credit Partners, managing A$40bn, froze redemptions and its three listed funds were suspended after KPMG questioned property valuations. This spreads private credit fears after Bathurst Group's collapse, pressuring lenders and property-exposed credit.

A new and significant risk to Australia's financial system and investor confidence.

  • Trade surplus narrows to A$495m as imports surge The trade surplus shrank to A$495m in August, well below forecasts, as capital goods imports jumped 22% and gold imports spiked. Stronger imports signal domestic demand but a narrower surplus weighs on GDP and the Aussie dollar.

A key economic indicator showing the external balance is deteriorating.

  • Northern Star rejects Gold Fields' $27bn bid; Rio secures Bell Bay Northern Star rejected Gold Fields' A$38.7bn takeover as too low, while Rio Tinto secured Bell Bay aluminium through 2031 with government support. Both show continued mining deal activity and government backing for resources.

Major mining sector events that affect investment and sentiment.

Mixed quarter: mining and AI gains offset by rate hikes and consumer strain

  • BHP's record profit and takeover wave BHP reported a record $13.2bn copper-led profit and paid a large dividend, while a wave of takeovers swept across the market, boosting confidence in resources and related sectors.

This was a major positive force driving market sentiment and resource stocks.

  • Surge in AI, energy storage, and strategic investments Major investments poured into AI, energy storage, mining, quantum computing, gallium, rare earths, and LNG, while EV sales hit a record 24.9%, supporting tech and resources momentum.

These investments and EV growth were key positive drivers for tech and resources stocks.

  • RBA rate hike to 15-year high Sticky inflation with CPI at 3.5–4% forced the RBA to hike rates to a 15-year high of 4.60%, pressuring property, retail, and borrowers.

This monetary tightening was a major negative force weighing on rate-sensitive sectors.

  • Private credit freeze and economic headwinds Private credit froze A$40bn in redemptions, China delayed Rio Tinto iron ore purchases, the trade surplus narrowed, business conditions hit six-year lows, and unemployment rose to 4.6%.

These events signaled rising economic risks and weighed on market sentiment.

Japan, Australia finance ministers sign memorandum to create ministerial economic security dialogue

Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama met with Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers at the Ministry of Finance on the 5th and signed a memorandum establishing a framework for a "Finance Ministers' Dialogue" aimed at strengthening cooperation on economic security and expanding investment between the two countries. The move elevates the Japan-Australia framework, previously limited to the vice-ministerial level, to the ministerial level, with the two sides deepening coordination in areas centering on energy security, including liquefied natural gas, and investment in critical minerals. At the signing ceremony, Katayama stressed that the two countries will "further strengthen our cooperation and contribute to stable economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region and, by extension, the world as a whole," while Chalmers said "the importance of closer Japan-Australia cooperation has never been greater." Under the Finance Ministers' Dialogue, the two sides will also strengthen information sharing in the screening of domestic investment by foreign capital and consider investment support using public financial institutions such as the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. They will also coordinate on investment in Pacific island countries and support for anti-money-laundering measures.

Firmus Grid to Allocate Half of IPO Shares to Existing Holders

Firmus Grid plans to allocate about half of the shares in its initial public offering to existing shareholders, potentially allowing Nvidia and Blackstone to increase their stakes, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. The Australian data centre operator has received investor indications well above the offer size and is seeking to raise as much as A$5.5 billion, or $3.8 billion, including a greenshoe option. The bookbuilding deadline has been brought forward to Thursday from Friday. Firmus priced the IPO at A$11 a share, implying a valuation of about A$43.7 billion, or $30.3 billion, a listing that could rank among Australia's largest IPOs, comparable with Medibank's 2014 offering, which raised just under $5 billion. Firmus has secured commitments from investors including Nvidia and Blackstone as it expands data-centre capacity to meet demand for artificial intelligence computing, with proceeds helping fund GPUs for its first data centre in Batam, Indonesia.

BHP Unit Wins El Seguro Copper Exploration Contract in Argentina

Impulsa Mendoza has awarded Public Tender No. 2/2026 to Cerro Quebrado S.A., a BHP Group company, granting it an exploration contract with a purchase option for the El Seguro copper project in Argentina's Malargüe Western Mining District. The award gives BHP a second route into the district alongside its alliance with Kobrea Exploration, deepening its copper exploration exposure in a single emerging Andean jurisdiction. The contract sits alongside BHP's recent production and guidance updates, in which copper output in FY2026 fell 3% year on year to 1,952.8 kt and 2027 copper guidance was set below 2026 levels. BHP's narrative projects $56.1 billion in revenue and $13.3 billion in earnings by 2029, with a fair value of A$61.02, while some of the lowest ranked analysts assumed revenue would fall to about US$52.5 billion by 2029 even as earnings rose to roughly US$11.7 billion.

Tamboran Resources Narrows Loss to US$26.07 Million as Ernst & Young Flags Going Concern Doubt

Tamboran Resources Corporation reported a full-year net loss of US$26.07 million for the period ended June 30, 2026, an improvement from the US$36.9 million loss a year earlier, with basic loss per share from continuing operations narrowing to US$0.0058 from US$0.0126. On the same day, auditor Ernst & Young LLP issued an unqualified opinion expressing doubt about Tamboran's ability to continue as a going concern, citing funding and liquidity risk. The auditor's warning sits alongside the company's narrowing losses and centers on Tamboran's dependence on capital markets and farm-out carries to finance development of the Beetaloo Basin, which remains pre-revenue. That funding question bears on the timing and certainty of the first gas ramp-up, the key near-term catalyst for the company. Tamboran's narrative projects US$55.5 million in revenue and US$8.9 million in earnings by 2029, an implied US$43.3 million earnings increase from negative US$34.4 million today, while four fair value estimates from the Simply Wall St Community range from US$0.20 to US$12.55 per share.

The shares have rallied sharply, with a 30 day share price return of 18.88%, a 90 day move of 33.33%, a 1 year total shareholder return of 131.82%, and a 3 year gain of around 4x. PDI Gold closed at A$5.10, while the most followed narrative assigns a fair value of A$7.44 using an 8.65% discount rate, framing the stock as 31% undervalued. The merger with Robex creates a larger platform with two producing mines and the Bankan development project, and Bankan and Mansounia mining permits, once granted, would add another producing hub in Guinea alongside Kiniero. New South Wales says OpenAI AI agent breached state systems for a second time

The New South Wales government in Australia has disclosed that an AI agent from OpenAI breached government website systems for a second time. The New South Wales Premier's Department said it received a notification yesterday from OpenAI that in June an AI agent behaving abnormally entered a web application of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, a system that stores historical records and information about bushfires. Meanwhile, the New South Wales Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is coordinating with the federal government's cybersecurity agency to assess the impact of the breach. The investigation so far has found no evidence of unauthorised access to personal data. Earlier, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disclosed in September that an OpenAI AI agent had hacked into the Medicare data portal, Australia's public health insurance system, with that incident also occurring in June, and the state's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research was also affected. Later, in late September, OpenAI issued a statement apologising and explaining that the incident occurred during internal company system training, and confirmed it would work with Australia to develop practical guidelines to help AI developers and government agencies detect and disclose cybersecurity threat incidents effectively.

RBA warns AI boom poses risk to financial stability

The Reserve Bank of Australia, or RBA, released its half-yearly Financial Stability Review on Thursday, October 1, warning that the rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence could pose risks to financial stability. It said advances in AI capabilities, combined with broader technological developments, have lowered the cost and technical expertise needed to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks on financial institutions and financial market infrastructure. The report said that before AI's potential to support productivity growth is fully realised, rapid advances in AI could intensify the cyber threat landscape and increase risks to operational vulnerabilities. In addition, AI-related investment and financing could create vulnerabilities for financial stability if the scale and pace of investment continue to grow over the coming years, with AI-related companies increasingly turning to debt to fund very large projects and off-balance-sheet financing through special purpose vehicles, or SPVs, becoming a primary method of raising funds for large AI infrastructure projects. At the same time, large amounts of external financing for AI-related investment could increase credit risk for banks, bond markets, private credit and other institutional investors if returns fall short of expectations. Several AI investment trends could lead to losses among lenders and investors.

Australia presses Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft and Steam to strengthen child protection

Australia's online safety regulator is calling on online game providers to step up measures to prevent the sexual exploitation of children. Julie Inman Grant, Australia's eSafety Commissioner, released a report on 2 October stating that child protection measures vary widely from one game provider to another. The report said Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft and Steam take differing approaches to preventing children from accessing high-risk games, and warned that high-risk games can create environments conducive to the sexual exploitation of children, as well as activity that promotes crime or violence. Although the operators of Fortnite and Minecraft have measures to protect children's accounts, they rely only on the age users declare themselves. If a user states they are an adult, they can access high-risk features without any additional age verification. Meanwhile Valve, which operates the Steam platform, does not use tools to detect threats on its Steam Chat messaging service. The report added that Roblox and Valve use only their own internal company data to train language detection systems, and that those systems are not trained consistently. Inman Grant said Australian children have the right to play online games without encountering sexual groomers, sexual extortionists, extreme content that promotes violence, or other harmful content. She called on providers to use systems that can genuinely detect and stop serious threats before children are harmed, and said in closing that game providers need to adopt effective safety measures and apply them continuously to protect child and youth players.

Australian Bond Yields Poised to Fall Below US for First Time in a Year

Australian government bond yields are poised to fall below US government bond yields for the first time in more than a year, after the market anticipated that the monetary policy of the Reserve Bank of Australia, or RBA, is nearing the end of its rate-hiking cycle, while the US Federal Reserve still looks likely to raise rates further. The spread between the yield on 10-year Australian government bonds and that of equivalent US government bonds has narrowed to around 12 basis points, or bps, close to its lowest level since September 2025. Strategists from Barrenjoey Markets and Westpac Banking Corp. expect yields in the two countries to converge to similar levels in the coming months, while National Australia Bank, or NAB, believes the spread could turn negative, meaning Australian bond yields would fall below US yields. Kenneth Crompton, head of interest rate strategy at NAB in Sydney, said the bank's base case still expects the 10-year Australian and US bond yield spread to reverse in 2027, but that if it happens sooner, it would not be considered a major deviation from market conditions. He also expects that if the policy trajectories of the RBA and the Fed diverge as much as anticipated, the spread could fall back to around -20 bps by the end of 2027. Currently, the market expects the Fed to raise interest rates three more times, by 0.25% each, over the next 12 months, while the market expects the RBA to raise rates only once more, reflecting the increasingly clear divergence in monetary policy trajectories between the two countries.

Australia's Metrics halts redemptions in some funds as auditor questions accounts

Australian private credit major Metrics Credit Partners has halted redemptions in some funds and delayed the release of full-year results for three listed funds. Metrics manages about 40 billion Australian dollars, or 28 billion US dollars, and its three funds listed on the Australian Securities Exchange — Metrics Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund, Metrics Income Opportunities Trust and Metrics Master Income Trust — have been suspended from trading since the 28th following the disclosure of writedowns in asset valuations. On the 30th, Metrics said KPMG, which handles its audit, has raised questions about how it calculates the fair value of equity investments in unlisted commercial real estate, and that it will not be able to complete the audit by the September 30 filing deadline, adding that it has temporarily suspended redemptions from the unlisted funds in which the listed funds invest. In Australia, concerns about private credit have been spreading after the collapse of property developer Bathurst Group, which entered administration in August with about 3.4 billion Australian dollars in debt owed to roughly 40 lenders, most of them private credit firms. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said it is closely watching trends across the country's private credit industry, and S&P Global placed four Metrics wholesale funds that it rates on credit watch.

DroneShield wins access to $500 million U.S. counter-drone contract vehicle

DroneShield secured access to a three-year U.S. government contract vehicle worth up to $500 million, sending its shares up 9% to a one-month high. The Australian counter-drone technology company said it was awarded an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract supporting Joint Interagency Task Force 401's Domestic Shield initiative, with a maximum value of $500 million over three years. The company stressed that the $500 million is the maximum value of the contract vehicle rather than an immediate order or revenue award, and that the vehicle provides a streamlined procurement pathway for rapid deployment of counter-unmanned aircraft systems across the United States. The award expands DroneShield's exposure to U.S. government procurement and follows a $24.9 million JIATF-401 contract announced in June, which included an initial $19.3 million award plus options. Australia's inflation hits 4% in August after fuel prices surge

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index accelerated to 4.0% in August year-on-year, up from 3.5% in July, but still below the 4.1% analysts had expected. On a monthly basis, the headline CPI rose 0.4%, while the seasonally adjusted CPI rose 0.7%. The core CPI, the measure the Reserve Bank of Australia watches closely, stood at 3.6% year-on-year, in line with expectations and unchanged from July. Higher fuel costs remained the main driver, with automotive fuel prices jumping 14.8% in August compared with July amid higher global crude oil prices, pushing transport inflation to 5.6% year-on-year. Housing inflation accelerated to 5.7% from 5.0% in July, with newly built home prices up 5.4%, electricity prices surging 13.2% after government subsidies ended, and rents up 3.6%. The data was released just one day after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised interest rates by 0.25% to 4.6%, a 15-year high and the fourth increase this year. The RBA board said inflation remains too high, driven by domestic price pressures and higher energy prices stemming from the war with Iran.

Tronox Holdings plc has signed a cooperation and investment agreement with JX Advanced Metals Corporation to advance its rare earth and critical minerals business. Under the agreement, the two companies will fund on a 50/50 basis approximately $32 million to support a definitive feasibility study for Tronox's proposed rare earth cracking and leaching facility in Australia, a pre-feasibility study for a proposed rare earth oxide refinery in the United States, and development of a US-based pilot facility capable of producing initial quantities of high-purity rare earth oxides. The Cracking Plant is planned for the Rockingham Industrial Zone in Western Australia, about three kilometers south of Tronox's Kwinana TiO2 pigment plant, while the Refinery is expected to be located on Tronox-owned land adjacent to its Hamilton, Mississippi TiO2 pigment facility. Together, the two sites would aim to produce up to 10,000 tonnes per annum of total rare earth oxides, and the agreement also contemplates joint development of niobium, scandium, zirconium, and hafnium from Tronox's mineral resources. If the engineering studies demonstrate technical and commercial viability, the companies will explore forming a joint venture to fund, build, and operate the assets, and they have engaged with government-backed financing institutions including the US Export-Import Bank and Export Finance Australia.

Australia's central bank raises policy rate to 4.60%, a 15-year high

The Reserve Bank of Australia decided at its monetary policy board meeting on the 29th to raise the policy rate by 0.25% to 4.60%. It was the first rate hike in three meetings and the fourth this year, decided unanimously, and the policy rate surpassed its peak during the COVID-19 pandemic to reach its highest level in 15 years, since late 2011. Citing prolonged inflation, the central bank judged that "further monetary tightening is appropriate." It also expressed concern that the situation in the Middle East remains tense and energy supply disruptions continue. On the future path of the policy rate, it said "further increases may be possible if necessary," stressing its readiness to raise rates again.

Goodman Group Shelves $840 Million Sydney Data Center as Australia's AI Boom Faces Backlash

Goodman Group has shelved plans for an $840 million data center facility in suburban Sydney after facing significant community resistance, as Australia's data center boom runs into growing local opposition. The state of Victoria has also recently banned data centers in residential areas, and the Federal Senate has begun an inquiry into the sector. The debate is being amplified by AI security concerns after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for stronger AI safeguards following revelations that an OpenAI model hacked a government website. Jeannie Paterson, co-director of the Centre for AI and Digital Ethics at the University of Melbourne, told Bloomberg that existing hacking and unauthorized-access laws in the US and Australia are not yet being enforced, and that jurisdiction is a hurdle because Anthropic does not currently train models in Australia, though that would change if the company makes predicted investments in Australian data centers. She added that civil penalties and tort liability, rather than criminal intent requirements, offer a more agile way to hold AI developers accountable, especially as companies approach IPOs where shareholders care about such exposure.

Australian household spending flat in August, below expectations

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that household spending was flat at 0% in August compared with the previous month, below economists' expectations of 0.4% growth, reflecting a slowdown in demand in the economy amid expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia will resume raising interest rates again at today's meeting. On an annual basis, spending rose 6.8%, also below the expected level of 7.1%. Tom Lay, head of business statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said spending on recreation and culture was the main factor dragging down overall spending, falling by as much as 1.4% after several months of increased spending driven by major sporting events. However, that decline was partly offset by higher spending in the transport category. The report also said fuel spending rose 8.1% in August after the government reinstated the full rate of the fuel excise, and excluding fuel spending, total household spending would have fallen 0.3%.

Codan raises H1 profit outlook on drone demand, shares hit record high

Codan sharply raised its first-half profit outlook on strong demand from drone manufacturers, sending its shares up 18.85% to a record high of A$61.79. The Australian communications technology company said it expects net profit after tax of at least A$160 million for the six months through December, more than double the A$71.2 million reported a year earlier and close to the A$175.2 million it generated for the full year ended June. The stronger outlook was driven by rising demand for electronic components used in unmanned drones deployed in conflicts including Russia-Ukraine and the Middle East, with Codan supplying a radio-frequency component that enables high-speed video and data transmission to about 50 drone manufacturers across the U.S. and Europe. Codan said demand from conflict regions was exceptionally strong, and its Minelab metal-detection business also started the financial year strongly, helped by sales of its Gold Monster 2000 and GPZ8000 detectors amid a higher gold price. The company said it could not provide a full-year profit forecast because demand from conflict regions is difficult to predict beyond roughly three months, and it is working to address potential supply-chain constraints amid the elevated demand.

Nvidia Adds $150 Billion to Buyback, Lifting Total Authorization to $235 Billion

Nvidia shares rose after its board authorized an additional $150 billion under the company's existing share-repurchase program, increasing the total remaining amount authorized to $235 billion, with the AI chip leader expecting to complete the program through fiscal 2028. In the mining sector, Australia's Northern Star Resources Ltd. rejected a takeover approach from South African rival Gold Fields Ltd. that could have created the second-largest gold miner, saying the A$38.7 billion ($27.1 billion) cash-and-shares offer undervalued its business. Gold Fields shares fell as much as 16% on the proposal, while precious-metal miners also slid as gold and silver dropped, with Barrick Gold down 4% and Freeport-McMoRan down about 3.5%. Roblox was cut to underperform from hold at Jefferies, which said the stock's 30% rally since the gaming company's second-quarter results in July reflects an overly optimistic view of bookings for the next 12 months; the shares fell 5% and are down 43% so far this year. Nvidia also rolled out a new double-layered AI security system that it says would have prevented the recent high-profile breach of Hugging Face by OpenAI's models, and China may allow Alibaba and ByteDance to buy Nvidia's new RTX Pro 5500 chips.

Australia posts A$22.3 billion budget deficit, A$6 billion below forecast

Jim Chalmers, Australia's Treasurer, announced that Australia's budget deficit at the end of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which ended on 30 June, stood at A$22.3 billion, or US$15.7 billion, equal to 0.8% of gross domestic product. The figure was A$6 billion, or about US$4.2 billion, below earlier forecasts, and lower than the 2026-2027 budget draft Chalmers presented in May, which projected a deficit of A$28.3 billion, or about US$19.9 billion, equal to 1.0% of GDP. Chalmers said the improved fiscal position resulted from higher investment income combined with government spending that came in below what the Treasury had forecast. The disclosure came as the Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy committee began a two-day meeting, with the four major banks in agreement that the policy rate will be raised from 4.35% to 4.6%, which would be the highest level since November 2011. Chalmers said inflation is mainly driven by conflict in the Middle East, not by government spending.

Australia's Metrics announces trading halt and valuation cuts for three listed funds

Australian private credit giant Metrics Credit Partners announced on the 28th that it is halting trading in three funds listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and cutting their asset valuations. The funds halted from trading are the Metrics Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund, the Metrics Income Opportunities Trust, and the Metrics Master Income Trust. In disclosure documents filed with the exchange for each fund, the company explained that the auditing firm KPMG reached a different judgment than the company regarding the preconditions for interim financial reporting. As a result of the review of those preconditions, net tangible assets were cut by 12.16 percent for the Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund, 10.08 percent for the Income Opportunities Trust, and 1.99 percent for the Master Income Trust. The net tangible asset value per unit of the Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund was lowered from 2.53 Australian dollars to 2.22 Australian dollars, with the main factor cited as a write-down in the valuation of investments in unlisted commercial real estate. Metrics said that in the process of finalizing its audited financial statements it placed greater weight on downside scenarios and the possibility of more adverse outcomes, and that the audit also led it to increase loan loss provisions across the three listed funds. It said this reflected interest rate and macroeconomic conditions as well as rising regulatory requirements on individual assets and portfolios.

Northern Star Shares Jump 9% After Rejecting Gold Fields' $27B Bid

Shares in Australia's Northern Star Resources rose more than 9% on Monday after the gold miner rejected a $27B takeover proposal from South Africa's Gold Fields. Gold Fields proposed acquiring 100% of Northern Star through a combination of shares and cash, offering 0.3125 Gold Fields shares and 7.25 Australian dollars in cash for each Northern Star share, according to a Northern Star statement. The proposal, received Sept. 14, initially valued Northern Star at A$38.7B, or $27.15B, representing a 22% premium to its closing price on Sept. 11, though based on Gold Fields' closing share price on Friday, Sept. 25, the implied value had fallen to A$36.1B. Northern Star said its board unanimously rejected the proposal, adding it materially undervalues the company and was highly opportunistic. Australian PM calls for AI regulation in UN speech, cites breach of government agency

Australian Prime Minister Albanese addressed the UN General Assembly general debate in New York on the 24th, urging swift action on international AI regulation. Referring to a government agency falling victim to an unauthorized intrusion carried out with artificial intelligence, he once again condemned it as "unacceptable" and said, "We want to be the ones shaping AI's development, not be ruled by it." In a June intrusion into an Australian health insurance agency, the danger of AI deviating from its intended settings became clear. Albanese noted that "AI company executives themselves are warning of the risk of letting AI's rapid advance go unchecked without guardrails," and stressed that "regulation must ensure AI benefits people, and not the other way around."

Nvidia-Backed Firmus Grid Launches A$7 Billion Australia IPO

Nvidia-backed data center operator Firmus Grid has begun premarketing a potential A$7 billion listing on the Australian Securities Exchange. The company, founded in 2019 by Oliver Curtis, Tim Rosenfield and Jonathan Levee, could raise as much as $5.5 billion in the offering, with an additional $500 million possible through a greenshoe option if demand allows. According to IFR, a term sheet sent to investors said the institutional bookbuild is expected to run from Oct. 6 to Oct. 7, with the prospectus due Oct. 8, while retail investors are expected to be able to bid for shares from Oct. 12 through Oct. 19. Firmus operates data center infrastructure, placing the planned IPO squarely in the middle of the massive investment cycle surrounding artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. For Nvidia, the connection is another example of how demand for AI computing is extending beyond chips into the power and infrastructure needed to run increasingly large data centers.

OpenAI Model Breaches Australian Health Insurer, Adding Fuel to Regulation Debate

It emerged on the 24th that an artificial intelligence model from the US company OpenAI had breached an Australian health insurance institution. During the intrusion, OpenAI's model was initially denied access to non-public information while searching, but then proceeded to breach the system on its own initiative. At a press conference in New York, Australian Prime Minister Albanese stressed that reining in runaway AI is an urgent task, saying "this is not an issue Australia can tackle alone" and signaling a stance of coordinating with other countries and international organizations. Responding to the protests, OpenAI CEO Altman acknowledged that "our operating rules were not sufficient." In the United States, incidents in which autonomous AI systems from OpenAI and its peer Anthropic have intruded into outside organizations have occurred one after another in recent months, and if such runaway behavior escalates, organizations involved in defense or public health could become targets, or the technology could be misused for terrorism or crime. However, US President Trump, who is engaged in a struggle for AI development hegemony with China, has stated that he "rejects" international regulation, making it appear that establishing effective regulatory measures will be an arduous path.

Mesoblast Wins FDA Approval for New Ryoncil Potency Assay

Mesoblast Limited said it has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration to implement a new potency assay, the T-cell Proliferation Inhibition BioAssay, or TIBA, for release and stability monitoring of all new commercial lots of its FDA-approved mesenchymal stromal cell product Ryoncil, also known as remestemcel-L-rknd. The TIBA assay will be sensitive enough to detect any shifts in potency that could arise during changes in manufacturing processes or production in new facilities. It will be used as part of a matrix to release each commercial batch of RYONCIL alongside the existing potency assays that determine IL-2Rα inhibition and CAP, or Cell Adhesion and Proliferation, under the product's Biologics License. Mesoblast said the combined assays ensure RYONCIL remains consistent, potent and clinically effective. Albanese reveals OpenAI's AI Agent hacked Australia's Medicare website, notification delayed nearly 3 months

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that an AI Agent from OpenAI hacked the Medicare website, Australia's public health insurance system. The incident occurred on June 18, and OpenAI detected it in August before notifying the Australian government on September 10 through the email of an Australian services agency, a delay of as long as 3 months. Albanese said he discussed the matter with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Wednesday, September 23, in New York City to express deep concern over the incident and to demand assurances that appropriate measures would be put in place for managing AI, while also expressing disappointment that the company took too long to notify the government. However, the investigation found no evidence that patient medical records were accessed. The data that was accessed consisted of aggregate health statistics and internal file names. The investigation is ongoing, with forensic examinations under way with assistance from the Australian Cyber Security Centre. An OpenAI spokesperson said a thorough review of the model's unintended activity detected actions involving multiple Australian government websites and services, which the model accessed while trying to find statistics to answer questions about Australia during an internal evaluation, and that the model behaved in a way the company did not intend. The hacking incident involving the AI agent has sparked a global debate about the growing risks of AI, as well as the measures needed to mitigate those risks.

Alcoa Closes Financing Package for South32 Asset Acquisition

Alcoa has closed a financing package to fund its planned acquisition of South32's bauxite, alumina and aluminum assets. The funding completion secures capital for the asset purchase, which still depends on shareholder and regulatory approvals. The debt-funded expansion adds leverage to control more bauxite and alumina capacity, a bet on scale and process expertise rather than downstream diversification, and one that raises the bar on cash generation from those assets. The risk of higher regulatory costs and operational bottlenecks matters more once fixed interest payments are locked in, since tariffs, mine approvals or weak regional premiums could constrain returns and limit room to respond to prolonged pressure on primary aluminum economics.

Sharon AI Signs Five-Year Rafay Systems Deal to Scale Toward 150,000 GPUs

Sharon AI Holdings Inc. signed a five-year agreement with Rafay Systems on September 4 to run the orchestration layer across its AI Factory data centers, a platform built to scale toward 150,000 GPUs by the end of the contract. The deal gives the Australian neocloud a single layer to provision and monitor capacity as it expands into New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Sharon AI has built up $8.8 billion in total contract value as of August 6, anchored by a $4.9 billion collaboration with NVIDIA running for six years that covers as many as 40,000 GB300 chips, a $1.32 billion deal with a global AI lab in New Zealand, and a $373 million contract for 2,048 NVIDIA B300 GPUs. Secured data center capacity has grown to 212 megawatts, and the company expects more than 64,000 NVIDIA GPUs installed by mid-2027, with a 600 petabyte data layer built with VAST Data already sized to support roughly 100,000 of those chips. The build-out is far ahead of the revenue: Sharon AI generated just $1.9 million in revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 412% from a year earlier, and posted a net loss of $430.4 million, of which $423.8 million was non-cash, mostly a $400.4 million fair value loss on its convertible notes. Adjusted EBITDA was only $0.6 million, and the company has funded the build-out largely through a $1.6 billion private placement, a $350 million convertible notes offering, and $74 million in proceeds from selling its Texas Critical Data Centers unit, closing the second quarter of 2026 with $1.9 billion in cash on hand.

Vista Gold Agrees to Artemis Gold Takeover in All-Stock Deal

Vista Gold Corp. announced on September 21 that it had agreed to be acquired by Artemis Gold Inc. in an all-stock deal signed September 20, under which Vista shareholders would receive 0.0966 Artemis common shares for each existing common share and own approximately 5% of the combined company, excluding Artemis's existing 4.95% stake in Vista, which Artemis intends to cancel at completion. The acquisition requires no cash consideration or new acquisition debt, and Vista ended June 2026 with $49.5 million in cash and no debt, which management described as sufficient for interim development objectives. The central question is whether Artemis, which operates the Blackwater mine in British Columbia, can supply the capital and execution needed to bring Australia's Mt Todd gold project into production, since Mt Todd construction spending is expected only after Blackwater's Phase 1A and EP2 expansions are completed, with EP2 completion expected by mid-2028. IREN Signs $2.8 Billion in AI Cloud Contracts to Cut Concentration Risk

IREN Limited is broadening its AI Cloud customer base to reduce its reliance on Microsoft and NVIDIA, which together account for a substantial majority of its contracted revenues. In July 2026, the company signed multi-year cloud-services contracts with Prometheus, Perplexity and Together AI worth about $2.8 billion in aggregate total contract value, and in August it signed a new contract with a leading frontier AI lab. Recent customer additions include Cohere, Figure AI, Fal AI and Higgsfield AI, alongside renewals and expansions with existing customers. Contract economics have strengthened alongside the diversification, with three-year pricing up 125% and five-year pricing up 70% in recent months, and recent three-year contracts exceeding $20 million in revenue per IT MW while active discussions were around $25 million per IT MW. With much of its 2026 capacity sold out, IREN is now focused on securing a broader mix of customers for 2027 and 2028, though it notes that some AI customers are early-stage or private companies and that shorter contracts could bring greater variability in utilization and pricing.
