The heart of an electric car isn't the motor or the software — it's the 'battery cell,' which eats up roughly 30–40% of the whole vehicle's value. So whoever can make cells cheapest and best controls the entire EV game. And today the answer is startlingly clear: two Chinese companies together hold more than half the world market, while the Korean and Japanese giants are bleeding heavy losses — in the middle of a price war and a glut of capacity.

Amprius Technologies Lands US$75 Million US Defense Battery Deal

Amprius Technologies announced in late September 2026 that it entered into a US$75 million fixed-price Other Transaction Agreement with the U.S. Government for Project acCELLerate, alongside a separate U.S. Department of War IBAS grant, to build secure domestic high-energy density battery production for small unmanned aerial systems. The awards position Amprius to retrofit an existing South Korea-linked EV battery line into a U.S.-compliant facility capable of producing 12 million silicon-anode cells annually for NDAA-compliant defense customers. The company had already lifted its August 2026 guidance to at least US$140 million in full-year revenue with a narrower net loss. Amprius' narrative projects US$415.0 million in revenue and US$53.6 million in earnings by 2029, yielding a US$22.12 fair value, while the most cautious analysts assume about US$362 million of revenue and roughly US$40 million of earnings by 2029. The growing dependence on government-backed drone programs also concentrates risk should procurement cycles shift.

Polysilicon makers plan to cut output to 35% from October; solar, storage and lithium battery sectors see positive catalysts

Solar, energy storage and lithium battery sectors are getting a boost from multiple positive catalysts. According to industry information, 11 polysilicon producers discussed controlling operating rates at around 35% starting in October. If the production cuts are carried out as planned, they would help ease inventory pressure and shift industry competition from low-price capacity expansion toward a rebalancing of supply and demand. In energy storage, Nvidia launched the DSX Ready certification program, bringing battery energy storage systems into the category of core equipment for AI factories, with a focus on fast response, stable power supply and power quality. Energy storage is thus extending beyond traditional peak shaving and valley filling to ensuring the stable operation of computing infrastructure. In lithium batteries, CATL's battery cell plant in Debrecen, Hungary began trial production on September 22, marking the entry of localized European capacity into the equipment and process validation stage. Guosheng Securities noted that expectations for polysilicon production cuts are clear, and supply contraction is expected to help stabilize prices along the industrial chain. From October, the industry's overall operating load is expected to fall to around 35%, and some downstream companies have already begun gradually restocking. Polysilicon producers are showing a stronger willingness to hold prices, generally using full cost as the floor for quotations. As of 1:39 p.m. on September 28, 2026, the STAR Innovation Energy ETF managed by Penghua, ticker 588830, saw its underlying index, the SSE STAR Market New Energy Index, ticker 000692, fall 4.64%, with KBC Corporation leading the decline among constituents, down 9.66%.

Reuters: Trump EV Policy Rollback Derails US Battery Investment as GM, Ford Cut Back

A Reuters investigation published on September 16, 2026 found that Trump administration policies, chiefly the elimination of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, have derailed a wave of American EV and battery manufacturing investment, with roughly 87% of announced EV-related investments concentrated in states Trump won in 2024. General Motors' Ultium Cells battery joint venture in Lordstown, Ohio idled production and laid off about 480 workers, while Ford scaled back its Glendale, Kentucky battery plant workforce to less than half its original planned size. Ford has announced a $19.5 billion write-down, including $8.5 billion tied to canceled EV models, after replacing the fully electric F-150 Lightning with an extended-range model, and CEO Jim Farley linked the reversal to the sales decline that followed the tax credit's expiration. GM recorded a $6 billion charge, including a $4.2 billion cash charge tied mainly to canceled supplier commitments and settlements, and its EV sales dropped 43% in the fourth quarter of 2025, with approximately 600 Lordstown workers still on indefinite layoff. Tesla's U.S. sales fell nearly 23% year over year to 39,800 vehicles in November 2025 after the credit expired, even after it introduced cheaper Model 3 and Model Y versions.

PwC says Thailand leads ASEAN-6 EV sales, up 47% in first half of 2026

A PwC report titled 'Overview of the ASEAN-6 automotive market: 6th market snapshot' states that in the first half of 2026, xEV sales accounted for 32% of total car sales in the ASEAN-6 group. In Thailand, the share of xEV sales in total car sales rose from 32% in the first half of 2024 to 53% in the same period of 2026, while BEV sales increased by about 84% from the same period a year earlier. Thailand's total car sales in the first half of 2026 rose 15%, while total car sales across the ASEAN-6 rose 11%, with Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand the main markets driving growth. Steve Yang, head of the automotive business client group at PwC Thailand, said the rapid growth of electric vehicle use in Thailand reflects a major shift in consumer behaviour, and noted that future leadership will depend on Thailand's ability to increase the share of value-added activities such as the production of batteries, electronics, software and advanced engineering. The PwC report also expects small vehicle production in the ASEAN-6 to rise to nearly 6 million units by 2030, with Thailand remaining one of the region's main automotive production bases. Meanwhile, Chinese carmakers increased their market share in the ASEAN-6 to 16% in the first half of 2026 from about 11% in 2025, and as Thailand's new car excise tax structure is due to take effect, a new round of mergers and acquisitions is expected in the market, particularly among Chinese carmakers.

GM Puts 100% Recycled Battery Minerals Into Customer EVs

General Motors has rolled out EV batteries using cathode material made entirely from recycled nickel, cobalt, and manganese in a new pilot. The recycled minerals come from end-of-life GM EV battery packs processed by recycling partner Cirba Solutions. According to the company, these 100% recycled critical minerals met original safety and performance specifications and are now installed in Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Silverado EVs sold to customers. GM's first EV batteries using fully recycled critical minerals mark one step in its efforts, with the broader business story running well beyond this pilot. General Motors, a US auto manufacturer with a reported market value of $73.5 billion, is using this recycling pilot to connect its long-running vehicle production footprint to a closed-loop battery materials chain that directly influences how future trucks, crossovers, and cars source critical minerals.

Tesla to Lead 2,500-Truck Electric Semi Order as Nevada Factory Opens

A newly formed freight coalition, ZET SCALE, has chosen Tesla to lead a 2,500-truck purchase of electric Class 8 vehicles, an order that if fully delivered would roughly double the number of battery-electric heavy trucks now running in the United States. Tesla is the lead supplier but shares the supplier list with PACCAR's Kenworth, RIDE and Volvo Group's Volvo, so the Semi will make up only part of the 2,500 units, though its share would likely still set a record and exceed earlier orders such as Einride's 500 trucks in August and WattEV's 370 in May. Deliveries are planned over several years and will serve 10 regional hubs, including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and the New York-Newark area. Tesla's new Semi factory in Nevada opens formally today beside the 4680 battery cell lines at Gigafactory Nevada, a 1.7-million-square-foot facility built to produce up to 50,000 trucks a year. The order is a genuine win, but execution risks remain high: Tesla has a record of missed production timelines, battery availability is a constraint, and BYD unveiled the ETT 44, a 44-tonne electric tractor with up to 1,000 horsepower and roughly 372 miles of range, at Europe's IAA Transportation show, where Tesla plans to bring the Semi late next year in standard-range form only.

Geely Unveils EV Battery That Charges in Under Five Minutes

Geely has unveiled an electric car battery that can charge in just four-and-a-half minutes, claiming the fastest charging time in the industry. The Chinese owner of Volvo said its new battery goes from 10pc to 70pc, an industry benchmark for a reasonable charge, in that time, shaving 20 seconds off the next best battery developed by BYD, China's biggest electric carmaker. Geely said its system can charge a battery from 10pc to 97pc in eight minutes and 40 seconds using a charger capable of delivering up to 2.2 megawatts of power, more than four times the 500 kilowatts of Tesla's latest Supercharger technology. Geely executive Zhang Dewang told Reuters at a launch event in China that the speed of charging was approaching the physical limit and that marginal gains from pursuing even faster speeds would become increasingly small. The Galaxy E5, an electric SUV, will be the first Geely model to use the new technology when it goes on sale in China later this year. Geely sold 1.42 million vehicles in the first half of this year and has raised its target for exports to 920,000 vehicles in 2026.

CATL Develops US-Specific Battery for Pick-Up Trucks Despite Trade Barriers

CATL has developed a "tall" battery design tailored to the US pick-up truck market despite trade restrictions blocking its entry into the country, the Financial Times reported. Citing CATL international business unit CTO Zhu Lingbo, the newspaper said US carmakers have already tested the batteries, though the companies were not identified. Zhu said CATL could license the technology to companies in the US for local production, following a model like its existing arrangements with Ford and Tesla for EV battery manufacturing in the country. Speaking at CATL's headquarters in Ningde, Zhu said the US remained a market with potential for "huge business" for the company "even with this kind of very intense geopolitics." The remarks came ahead of a planned summit in Washington involving US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and an earlier scheduled meeting in New York between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng. The Pentagon named CATL last year as a company with alleged military ties, a claim the firm has denied, while Chinese battery and EV manufacturers continue to face tariffs, localisation requirements and possible bans from Washington on national security grounds. Last week, organisations representing the US automotive industry asked Trump to maintain measures aimed at preventing Chinese carmakers and their supply chains from entering the US market, after Trump said he would "be OK" with China establishing car plants in the US if American workers were employed. In April, CATL introduced a new fast-charging EV battery, launching the third-generation "Shenxing" lithium-iron-phosphate battery, which it said can charge from 10% to 98% in six minutes and 27 seconds under moderate temperatures.

Tisco keeps Buy on CATL01 with 7.65 baht target, 60% upside

Tisco Securities released an analysis on September 16, 2026, maintaining a Buy recommendation for 3750 HK, the stock of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, or CATL, with a target price of 810 Hong Kong dollars per share. The depositary receipt referencing that stock and listed in Thailand under the name CATL01 carries a target price of 7.65 baht per share, implying 60.0% upside from 4.78 baht per share. The research team said that although the market is worried about CATL's declining market share, its US sales, and the issue of excess battery capacity, the firm views these factors as an investment opportunity. CATL's market share in August 2026 fell for a fourth consecutive month to 41.5%, down from 49.8% at the start of the year, while rival BYD raised its market share to 21.0%, an increase of 3.6 percentage points since the start of the year. The research team remains unconcerned about the excess capacity issue, even though China's monthly battery capacity in August 2026 stood at 237 GWh, up 69.8% from the same period a year earlier, because domestic Chinese battery demand, covering both the electric vehicle market and energy storage systems, was 223.1 GWh, up 65.9%, and that figure does not yet include demand from overseas markets. The target price valuation is based on a forward P/E assumption of 26.4 times and estimated 2027 earnings per share of 30.63 Hong Kong dollars per share. The 3750 HK stock price is 495.4 Hong Kong dollars, while CATL01 is at 4.78 baht. The research team noted that the prices of the underlying stock and the DR may be affected by exchange rate movements.

China August Industrial Output Beats at 5.2% as Retail Sales Slow to 0.4%

China's industrial output rose 5.2% year-on-year in August, beating expectations for a 4.8% gain and quickening from July's 4.5% increase, while retail sales grew just 0.4%, below the expected 0.8% rise, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Tuesday. The divergence deepened concerns over economic imbalances, with fixed-asset investment falling 7.2% in the first eight months, the steepest drop since April 2020, and property investment diving 19.9% over the same period. High-tech industry investment expanded 5.2% in January-to-August, with lithium-ion battery output soaring 57.2% and industrial robot output up 34.6% year-on-year. Oxford Economics cut its 2026 growth forecast by 0.1 percentage point to 4.7% and next year's to 4.3% from 4.6%, while ING's Greater China chief economist Lynn Song said GDP growth will likely remain sluggish in the third quarter. The urban surveyed unemployment rate edged up to 5.3% in August from 5.2%, and statistics bureau spokesperson Fu Linghui said sustained efforts are still needed to put the economy on a firmer growth trajectory.

MAHLE unveils range extender and magnet-free MCT motor at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026

MAHLE has announced it will present sustainable drive solutions at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 in Hanover, Germany, from September 15 to 20, 2026, under the theme Electrified. Efficient. Economical. The highlight is a range extender system for electric trucks, an intelligent power generating unit that combines a generator, a combustion engine, thermal management, a fuel tank, an AdBlue tank and exhaust aftertreatment in a single unit. It can be installed directly into existing electric truck platforms. The system delivers 110 kW of continuous electrical power and 130 kW of peak power, can replace roughly one third of existing battery capacity, and cuts total vehicle weight by about 600 kilograms, allowing an electric truck to travel more than 800 kilometers, split between 400 kilometers on battery and 400 kilometers on the range extender. It also reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 80 percent, falling to nearly zero when used with the renewable fuel HVO100. In addition, MAHLE is presenting the MCT electric motor, short for MAHLE Contactless Transmitter, for heavy-duty truck drive axles for the first time in the world. It uses no permanent magnets, cutting rare earth usage by up to 3 kilograms per vehicle, delivers a peak output of 370 kW and more than 900 newton meters of torque, and achieves efficiency of up to 95 percent in testing under the VECTO standard, while reducing drivetrain weight by 10 kilograms. Arnd Franz, chairman of the MAHLE management board and chief executive officer, said the market wants electrified solutions that are both cost-effective and practical, and called on governments and policymakers to embrace technological diversity, including battery electric vehicles, hydrogen and renewable fuels. MAHLE currently partners with more than 120 commercial vehicle manufacturers worldwide and aims to grow its commercial vehicle business faster than the market over the next five years.

GM Targets Domestic Battery Supply Chain Within Three Years

General Motors is developing a domestic battery supply chain it expects to complete within two to three years, even as it currently relies on some Chinese-sourced materials for existing battery production. Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of battery and sustainability, told CNBC the company's near-term goal is full domestic sourcing, centered on sodium-ion battery cells GM is developing with Denver-based startup Peak Energy for stationary energy storage in homes, businesses, and data centers. GM expects commercial production of those cells around 2029, and a GM spokesperson confirmed the same domestic sourcing priority would apply to battery cells for future electric vehicles. Sodium-ion cells are built around sodium from soda ash, which the U.S. holds in abundance, sidestepping the lithium and ferrous sulfate supply chains China currently controls, and Kelty said they handle a broader span of temperatures, removing the need for active thermal management. GM has committed $900 million to new battery research facilities at its suburban Detroit campus, including a cell prototyping building exceeding 500,000 square feet scheduled to open before the end of the year. The comments came as Ford faced criticism from the Trump administration over its battery sourcing, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying last week he had "profound concern" over Ford's licensing of technology from Chinese battery manufacturer CATL for its Marshall, Michigan plant, while Ford CEO Jim Farley called the charges "basic misunderstandings, mistruths" and the White House posted that Ford is "a GREAT American company."

Solidion Technology Authorizes $1.0 Million Stock Buyback Program

Solidion Technology's Board of Directors has authorized a new stock buyback program of up to $1.0 Million of the company's outstanding common stock. The program took effect on September 13, 2026, and will remain in effect until the full authorized amount is repurchased, March 14, 2028, or the date the Board terminates the authorization. The Dallas-based advanced battery technology provider said the authorization reflects the Board's confidence in its long-term strategy and gives it added flexibility in capital allocation, with open-market repurchases expected to comply with federal securities laws and Nasdaq requirements. Chief Executive Officer Jaymes Winters said the program reflects confidence in Solidion's long-term prospects and a commitment to disciplined capital allocation, adding that the company's technology, intellectual property and strategic position provide a strong foundation for future growth. Tesla Reclaims 52% of U.S. EV Market as Rivals Retreat

Tesla has reclaimed more than half of the U.S. electric-vehicle market, capturing 52% of U.S. EV sales through August, up from 43% a year earlier, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing data from Motor Intelligence. The gain reflects Tesla's relative resilience rather than a return to growth: its domestic sales fell 16% to 325,351 vehicles while the overall EV market contracted 30%. Tesla's market share had fallen to a record-low 41% in 2025 as competitors introduced more electric models and Chief Executive Elon Musk's political activities alienated some buyers, and its recovery has coincided with Ford, General Motors and other automakers reducing production or discontinuing EVs after federal incentives expired. The Honda Prologue, Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford F-150 Lightning are among the models being eliminated or phased out, while GM reduced production plans for the revived Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan delayed the least-expensive version of its new Leaf. The Model Y remains Tesla's main defense against the downturn, with sales declining only 2% this year and the SUV accounting for roughly one-third of all U.S. EV purchases, while Model 3 sales dropped 34% and Tesla sold only 9,769 Cybertrucks. Analysts expect Tesla to retain its dominant U.S. position while established automakers remain cautious about EV investment.

Geely's Galaxy TT EV launches in China at about $19,170

Geely Auto's Galaxy brand launched the Galaxy TT electric sedan in China on Sept. 10 at a limited-time starting price of 129,900 yuan, or roughly $19,170, according to CnEVPost. The entry version carries a 63.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate pack from CATL and delivers 640 km of range on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, with every trim in the lineup shipping an 800-volt architecture and 6C fast charging that moves the battery from 10% to 80% in about 11.8 minutes. The launch price landed 16,000 yuan below the August pre-sale figure, and the entry trim gained 100 km of range, while rear-drive models produce 245 kW, or 329 horsepower, and reach 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The sedan will not reach U.S. buyers: a China-built car faces a 2.5% base duty, the 100% Section 301 tariff imposed in 2024 and the 25% Section 232 tariff applied in 2025, landing a $19,170 sedan closer to $43,600 at the port, and the Commerce Department's Connected Vehicle Rule blocks cars with meaningful Chinese ownership or software ties starting with the 2027 model year. Geely-controlled Polestar said the Commerce Department declined its authorization covering new model variants from the 2027 model year onwards, while Volvo Cars, also controlled by Geely, was cleared in May after reworking how its vehicle data is governed and routed. Geely's exports rose 205% year over year in August to 110,094 vehicles, roughly 41% of total sales, while domestic volume fell about 25%, according to CnEVPost.

Global EV sales rise for a sixth straight month in August, driven by Europe as China and North America decline

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, a UK research firm, said on September 11 that global electric vehicle sales rose for a sixth consecutive month in August, with Europe the main market driving growth, while sales in China and North America fell. Global sales of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 2% year on year to 1.83 million units, bringing cumulative sales since the start of the year to 13.4 million units. In Europe, EV sales rose 36% to 380,000 units, lifting year-to-date sales by 29%, supported by European subsidy measures. In contrast, EV sales in China fell 11% to 1.03 million units, hit by a high year-earlier base, while the North American market dropped 33% to 140,000 units, which Benchmark Mineral Intelligence said reflected a rush by US consumers to buy EVs last year before federal tax credits expired in September 2025. Sales in markets other than China, Europe and North America jumped 97% to 290,000 units. Chinese automakers are increasingly relying on exports to drive growth.

China sets smart EV roadmap, targets widespread autonomous driving by 2030

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology unveiled a plan for the intelligent electric vehicle industry on Thursday, September 10, aiming for widespread use of autonomous driving vehicles by 2030. Under the plan, China will accelerate the deployment of autonomous driving technology on highways, urban expressways and some city roads, with the goal that autonomous vehicles meet higher safety standards than human driving. The ministry said the Chinese government aims to elevate the automotive industry into one of the pillars of the economy, develop several Chinese automakers into the world's top 10 by sales, increase global acceptance of Chinese car brands, and expand China's role in setting international automotive standards. At the same time, China will tighten regulations on vehicle production, road safety, autonomous driving systems and software updates, and will consider special-case approval processes for key components and vehicles produced in small volumes. The ministry added that China will strengthen oversight of vehicle and battery production capacity, curb excessive investment, promote industry consolidation and eliminate inefficient capacity, as well as step up antitrust enforcement, improve product quality supervision, promote fair competition and rein in inappropriate incentives from local governments. For overseas expansion, the ministry will draw up guidelines for Chinese automakers to comply with the regulations of other countries, and will promote cooperation between Chinese and foreign companies in research and development of vehicles and key components, investment, and global market expansion.
