Adobe Analytics forecasts U.S. online holiday spending will reach a record $275.1 billion between November 1 and December 31, up 6.7% year over year. Within that total, Cyber Week is projected to generate $47.5 billion in online sales, up 7.4% from last year and equal to 17.3% of all holiday e-commerce spending. Cyber Monday is expected to remain the biggest online shopping day with more than $15 billion spent, while Black Friday is projected at $12.9 billion, up 9.2%, and Thanksgiving at $6.9 billion, up 8.5%. Adobe expects discounts to reach as much as 14% in early November, climb to 21% just before Thanksgiving, and stay around 10% to 15% through December, with Amazon's October Prime Day event expected to pull nearly $10 billion of the $95.8 billion in projected October online spending. Electronics and apparel remain the largest online categories, with projected holiday spending of $63.3 billion and $51.3 billion respectively, and the report warns that deeper promotions could pressure margins at Amazon, Walmart and other major retailers if inventory is mismanaged.
