Anthropic's $518 Billion AI Spending Faces $4.2 Trillion Revenue Gap

Summary · why it matters

Anthropic's leaked IPO prospectus has reignited concerns over the staggering cost of the AI build-out, with the AI lab planning to spend $518 billion in the coming years on cloud, computing, and infrastructure after posting a net loss of $42 billion in 2025. Two new analyses now question whether that spending can ever be justified by revenue. Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk wrote in Tuesday's Daily Spark that Wall Street equity analysts work in sector silos whose forecasts are internally inconsistent, noting that tech analysts expect the sector's operating cash flow to more than double to roughly $2.4 trillion by 2028, an increase of over $1.2 trillion, while analysts covering the other S&P 500 companies that are tech's customers expect those firms to add much less operating cash flow. Sløk concluded that both cannot be right at the same time, and that either tech's customers will generate far more cash than their analysts expect or tech's cash flow forecasts are too optimistic. Separately, a new report from Bain Capital led by Silicon Valley Partner David Crawford predicted that sustaining capital expenditures at about 25% of industry revenue would require an AI market approaching $6 trillion annually, while the consumer and enterprise AI market will likely total only $1.2 trillion to $1.8 trillion, leaving a $4.2 trillion gap that will require dramatic innovation, not just productivity gains, to close.

NVIDIA and Sapphire Ventures Join Reactor's Series A Round

Reactor, the developer platform for real-time generative video and world models, announced that NVIDIA and Sapphire Ventures have joined its Series A round, which is led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company said the investment comes as demand grows for infrastructure capable of running increasingly powerful world models in real time. Reactor's proprietary inference engine, global GPU cloud and low-latency streaming layer let developers and enterprises run models at 60+ FPS and sub-40ms latency through a unified SDK and API. The platform is already used across media and entertainment, where major Hollywood studios, advertising platforms and video streaming services have active projects, and by leading world model labs in the U.S. and internationally. Reactor was co-founded by CEO Alberto Taiuti and CTO Bryce Schmidtchen, both former technical leads on Apple Vision Pro, and its team includes engineers and researchers from Apple, Meta, Google, Adobe, Replicate and Microsoft.

Deutsche Bank Sees Meta Muse Driving Up to $36.3 Billion in Sales by 2030

Deutsche Bank has laid out three scenarios for Meta Muse, forecasting that the product could generate $36.3 billion in sales by 2030 in its most optimistic case. The middle case projects about $10.7 million, while the base case puts revenue potential at roughly $2.4 billion. The forecasts were detailed on page seven of a Deutsche Bank note, and Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi said he double-checked the top figure to confirm it was $36.3 billion and not $36.3 million. Sozzi noted Meta's stock has climbed roughly 23 to 24 percent over the past month on optimism about Muse, citing strong downloads and early use cases. He also discussed Meta's talent push, including the hiring of the former MongoDB chief executive, with a former Meta chief technology officer who said Mark Zuckerberg personally recruits key leaders.

Bloomberg Intelligence: US AI Lead Over China Narrows to 3%

The US lead over China in artificial intelligence has narrowed to just 3%, according to new benchmarking data from Bloomberg Intelligence. That edge stood at 9% in May and 15% earlier this year, meaning the gap is closing very quickly. Much of China's progress comes from open weight models that are cheaper to produce and freely accessible, unlike the closed weight models from US companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The administration's hope has been that cutting off China's access to Nvidia's best chips would preserve the US advantage, but the silicon is already cut off and Chinese labs are still advancing rapidly. Meanwhile, Nvidia-backed US startup Reflection is pitching its open weight model as a domestic alternative for companies that want to build custom AI without relying on Chinese-based models.

New York City Council Weighs AI Safety Rules as Data Center Buildout Forecasts Diverge

The New York City Council will hold a hearing today where Jacob Coxon, the former Anthropic researcher whose viral prediction about AI risk set off a broader fear cycle, will testify in front of the city council alongside other whistleblowers including Alex Turner from DeepMind and Daniel Cocatajalo from OpenAI, while Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Google send representatives and SpaceX has been subpoenaed. The council is debating a sweep of proposals, including third-party validation of new models with a human-operated shutdown mechanism, a private right of action for foreseeable harm from third-party misuse, and whistleblower bounties paying 25% of proceeds if the city acts and 50% if designated to serve and sue. On the data center buildout, Bernstein and Goldman Sachs published new notes tracking gigawatt estimates, with the two landing in similar places: they look at about 18 gigawatts added this year, Goldman's at 26 for next year, and Bernstein's at 25, even amid regional political pushback. Bernstein surveyed 63 forecasts from 40 sources and found the range for gigawatts by 2030 runs from 59 to 186, while only 38% of projects on the books are expected to actually get built. In Washington, President Trump's super intelligence force will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, Pentagon Undersecretary Andrew Ferguson, Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael and OPM Director Scott Cooper, with a report due in 120 days to President Trump and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Bloomberg Intelligence reports the gap between top US and top Chinese models has narrowed to just 3% for the US edge, down from 9% in May and 15% earlier this year.

Former Anthropic Researcher to Testify at New York City AI Hearing

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon is set to testify at a New York City Council hearing on AI, alongside Alex Turner from Deep Mind and Daniel Kokotajlo from OpenAI. Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google will all send representatives to present their side, while SpaceX has not and has now been subpoenaed. The hearing will debate a sweep of proposals, including one that would require third-party validation of new models and a human-operated shutdown mechanism for any AI marketed, offered, sold, or deployed in New York City. The testimony comes as President Trump assembles a super intelligence task force led by director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, Pentagon undersecretary Andrew Ferguson, chief technology officer Emil Michael, and OPM director Scott Cooper, with a report due to Trump and chief of staff Susie Wiles in 120 days.

Hirundo Releases Westernized Qwen, Cutting CCP-Aligned Answers From 89.8% to 2.8%

Hirundo, an AI safety lab specializing in machine unlearning, released Westernized versions of Alibaba's Qwen open-weight models with Chinese Communist Party political alignment removed directly from the model weights. On Hirundo's evaluation, the original Qwen3.6-35B-A3B produced CCP-aligned censorship, propaganda-aligned framing or political bias in 89.8% of responses across a 500-prompt benchmark, while the Westernized model did so in 2.8%, with reasoning, coding and instruction-following performance essentially unchanged. The reduction held on two external benchmarks, with refusals on DECCP falling from 65.26% to 3.16% and non-compliance on ChinaBench falling from 96.67% to 6.67%, and the same method cut CCP-aligned responses in the much smaller Qwen3.5-4B from 89.2% to 1.2%. On GPQA, IFBench, LiveCodeBench and MMLU-Pro, the Westernized model's scores stayed within 0.72 points of the original model's on average, and its safety and harmfulness benchmark scores also held. Both models are available now on Hugging Face as Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Westernized and Qwen3.5-4B-Westernized, and Hirundo intends to release its CCPC-500 benchmark publicly.
