Bill Gates has warned that getting countries to agree on a global framework for AI could be more difficult than Cold War-era negotiations to restrict nuclear weapons. In an interview that aired earlier on Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, Mr Gates, 70, who has an estimated $115bn fortune, said he would like to meet with Donald Trump to discuss AI, arguing that regulating AI companies through monitoring systems would not hinder the US in its battle with China for technological supremacy. Mr Trump has voiced the opposing view, writing on Truth Social that "WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS!" and calling efforts to limit the technology a "SICK conspiracy," while confirming he plans to have a dinner meeting with Anthropic's CEO on Sunday night. Mr Gates said safeguards would not substantially hamper the industry and that the risks of not implementing them are real, telling NBC that "AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths." The confirmation of the meeting comes as the CEOs of Anthropic rivals, including OpenAI, Google, DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI, have called for slowing development of increasingly capable AI systems.
