China Mengniu Dairy CoMengniu's loan default and subsequent sale of Brownes indicate a loss on its investment.

Brownes Dairy has started the process to sell its Australia-based dairy and coffee-drinks business, with receivers McGrathNicol Restructuring managing the sale after Chinese dairy giant Mengniu consolidated its holding position and approved the move. The sale follows a default on a A$200m (US$143.6m) loan provided by Mengniu to Australian Zhiran Co., Brownes' ultimate holding company, which led to McGrathNicol's appointment as receiver in April last year. Brownes, founded in 1886 and Western Australia's oldest dairy company, markets products including the Hunt and Brew ready-to-drink coffee brand, which it launched in the UK in 2024, and recently acquired local co-packer Indul. CEO Natalie Sarich-Dayton called the process a natural step toward securing a long-term custodian for the company's next phase of expansion, though she declined to comment on potential suitors.
