Daiwa Securities Group said on October 5 that the customer data of about 110,000 clients of its securities brokerage unit may have leaked after a server managed by a subcontractor was accessed without authorization. The unauthorized access occurred between the evening of Friday and the morning of Saturday last week, October 2 to 3, on a server operated by Scala Communications, which provides an online customer inquiry management system to Daiwa Securities. Daiwa said the data stored on that server that may have leaked includes personal information such as names, email addresses and account numbers of about 110,000 customers, and that together with non-personal information, roughly 220,000 items of data may have been exposed. Daiwa, however, confirmed that even if the data was leaked, it cannot be used to conduct transactions, including online transactions, and it has not yet confirmed whether the data has been disclosed or circulated online.
