Comcast CorpAlan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman who served from 1987 to 2006 and became one of the most influential economic policymakers of his era, has died at age 100. He died Monday from complications of Parkinson's Disease, said his wife of 29 years, Andrea Mitchell, the chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC News. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan, Greenspan's tenure was the second longest in Fed history, during which he navigated crises including the 1987 Black Monday crash, the dot-com boom and bust, and the 9/11 attacks, while famously coining the phrase 'irrational exuberance' in a 1996 speech that briefly roiled global markets. His policies were later criticized for contributing to the housing bubble that led to the Great Recession, though he defended his low-rate approach as beneficial for homeownership. After leaving the Fed, he opened consulting firm Greenspan Associates and remained an outspoken voice on economic policy, criticizing President George W. Bush's spending and President Donald Trump's attacks on the central bank.
