Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, said the IMF will open an official office in Caracas, Venezuela, in the first half of next year to deepen cooperation and speed up the gathering of data on Venezuela's economy as well as its monetary and fiscal policies. Speaking to foreign media as she left a meeting with Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela's acting president, in New York on Monday, September 21, Georgieva confirmed that the office will definitely be established, possibly in the first half of next year, after months of discussions with Venezuelan officials. Rodríguez arrived in New York on Monday morning to attend the United Nations General Assembly, and also met with representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank, as Venezuela seeks to rebuild ties with international financial institutions. The move is the clearest confirmation yet of the plan and comes about five months after Venezuela began formally re-engaging with the IMF under Rodríguez's interim government, which took control of the country's administration after U.S. forces captured former president Nicolás Maduro, following years in which Venezuela was isolated. Senior IMF officials traveled to Caracas in late July, the first such visit in more than two decades, with an IMF team following afterwards.
