Tokyo Electric Power Company began the fourth release of treated water containing the radioactive substance tritium from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean on the 30th. About 7,800 tonnes will be diluted with seawater and discharged through an undersea tunnel to a point roughly one kilometre offshore by the 17th of next month. The treated water releases began in August 2023, and this marks the 22nd release overall. It is part of a plan to discharge approximately 62,400 tonnes in eight batches this fiscal year. Measurements by TEPCO and the government so far show that tritium concentrations in seawater and marine products are well below national standards.
