The head of the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, said the rush of Chinese manufacturers entering the British market is forcing existing players to offer steep discounts. Chinese-branded vehicles now account for around 15 percent of all new car registrations in the UK, with brands like MG and BYD gaining share. Intensifying competition is one factor behind the contraction of UK car production, with output in the first half of 2026 falling 7.5 percent year on year. While the EU has imposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, the UK has not taken similar steps, and Hawes added that no complaints have been lodged by British manufacturers.

FullGood Motor also said it is seeking investment to develop more vintage-inspired futuristic hybrid models drawing on classic mid-century American design. The vehicle it will showcase during the public days at the Los Angeles Convention Center from Nov. 20 through 29 is its Summer model, a 7-seat multi-door people mover inspired by 1950s van culture, which is currently not offered for sale in the United States. The company's American availability will depend solely on the partnerships it finds in Los Angeles, where hybrids took a record 22.1 percent of new registrations in the first half of the year according to the California New Car Dealers Association.

UK EV Market Forecast to Reach US$205.4 Million by 2030 at 3.8% CAGR
The United Kingdom electric vehicle market is forecast to grow 4.0% annually to reach US$176.7 million in 2026, according to a new Databook Q2 2026 Update from ResearchAndMarkets.com. After a 3.6% CAGR during 2021-2025, the market is projected to record a 3.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2030, rising from US$170.0 million in 2025 to approximately US$205.4 million by 2030. Growth is being shaped by the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, the Electric Car Grant, charging infrastructure development and domestic manufacturing strategy, with the government committed to ending sales of new internal combustion engine cars by 2030 and requiring all new cars and vans to be fully zero-emission by 2035. Nissan's Sunderland plant remains central to UK manufacturing, supported by a £450 million investment and the EV36Zero programme behind the next-generation LEAF, while BYD reported becoming the UK's best-selling EV brand in early 2026 and Chinese entrants including XPeng and Leapmotor expand through International Motors and Stellantis dealerships respectively. The report also flags the planned mileage-based Electric Vehicle Excise Duty in April 2028 as a factor expected to shift emphasis toward the total cost of EV ownership.
