UK CMA orders Google to improve transparency and fairness in search rankings, imposing binding requirements.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has ordered Google to improve transparency and fairness in its search result rankings. The CMA issued two conduct requirements after designating Google with strategic market status, citing its more than 90% share of UK searches. Google must now rank organic search results using objective and non-discriminatory criteria and provide clearer information about ranking changes. A previously voluntary data sharing tool will become legally binding. The regulator said the measures aim to secure a fairer deal for businesses and users.
