Chord Energy Sells $550 Million Marcellus Assets to POSCO International

Chord Energy has agreed to sell its US$550 million non-operated Marcellus position to POSCO International, refocusing the company on its Williston Basin portfolio while adjusting leverage, capital spending plans, and overall oil exposure. The sale comes as Chord Energy's shares have eased in the past week, with a 7 day share price return of 4.95% and a 30 day share price return of 2.27%, though the 90 day share price return of 16.10% and year to date share price return of 52.61% point to solid upward momentum. Longer term holders have already seen substantial gains, with a 1 year total shareholder return of 50.17% and a 5 year total shareholder return of 134.40%. Chord Energy last closed at $144.49, while the most followed narrative pegs fair value at $167.47, a gap built around efficiency, capital discipline, and how far the Williston focused portfolio can stretch its cash generation under a 7.24% discount rate. Strong execution of longer-lateral 4-mile drilling with early results significantly outperforming expectations positions Chord to lower breakeven costs and increase access to previously marginal acreage, though heavy reliance on the Williston Basin and exposure to tighter environmental rules could quickly challenge assumptions on production, costs and valuation.

Hanwha Builds Tokenization Platform on Avalanche Amid South Korea's 2027 Push

South Korea's Hanwha Investment & Securities, part of a conglomerate with roughly $200 billion in total assets, is building a tokenization platform on the Avalanche blockchain, but it is not acting alone. The platform, developed with FairSquare Lab since 2025, uses a dual-chain architecture with Avalanche for settlement and Hyperledger Besu for permissioned workflows, and Hanwha will participate in networks approved by the Korea Securities Depository, which is preparing its own multi-chain infrastructure. This coordinated institutional build spans securities firms, asset managers, and trading conglomerates, all targeting a February 2027 regulatory deadline set by the Financial Services Commission's three-phase tokenization roadmap unveiled on September 4. Hanwha is also the largest shareholder of Securitize with about 9.6% stake, and has invested in Xangle, Kresus, and raised its stake in Dunamu to 9.84% via a 597.8 billion won investment. Other players include Mirae Asset Global Investments, which signed an MOU with Ava Labs, POSCO International, which tokenized trade receivables, and NHN, which is building a payment blockchain, all converging on the same timeline. Avalanche hosts BlackRock's BUIDL fund with about $900 million in assets, and Progmat migrated Japan's largest security token platform to an Avalanche L1 covering over 452 billion yen, but the FSC's roadmap does not mandate a single blockchain, making Avalanche one of multiple options. South Korea's corporate crypto investment ban was lifted in January 2026, allowing listed companies to allocate up to 5% of shareholder equity annually to virtual assets, contrasting with the US, where regulatory clarity lags.

Meteoric and POSCO sign partnership on Brazil rare earths project

Meteoric Resources has signed a non-binding memorandum of strategic partnership with POSCO International to advance the Caldeira Rare Earth Project in Brazil. Under the agreement, POSCO could receive up to 30% of Caldeira's rare earth material for up to seven years, with pricing initially referenced to the Asian Metal Index. The partnership also contemplates POSCO's support for Meteoric's financing, including possible equity participation and assistance in seeking funding from Korean Export Credit Agencies such as the Export-Import Bank of Korea and Korea Trade Insurance. Both companies intend to share technology and industry practices to bolster Brazil's downstream rare earth sector, and metallurgical testing indicates Caldeira's rare earth carbonate can be processed by POSCO without extra refining steps. The memorandum remains subject to due diligence, internal approvals, and definitive agreements.

ReElement Technologies and POSCO Form $200M JV for US Rare Earth and Magnet Production

ReElement Technologies and Posco International have formed a $200 million joint venture to develop the first integrated rare earth separation and permanent magnet production facility in the United States. The initiative aims to establish a secure, non-China supply chain for critical industries including electric vehicles, defense, and renewable energy, with plans to reach an annual separation capacity of 3,000 metric tons by 2028 and double that by 2030. The partnership combines Posco's industrial market expertise with ReElement's proprietary purification technology to create a closed-loop system using both primary and recycled feedstock, seeking to reduce US dependence on Chinese refining which currently controls over 90% of global permanent magnet production. The companies are evaluating potential US site locations for the modular and scalable project, which is designed to meet surging demand from the North American automotive and advanced technology sectors.
