Flowers Foods hit by weak demand, guidance cut, and Tastykake sale plan

  • Q2 miss and 2026 guidance cut Flowers Foods reported Q2 sales down 4% to $1.19B, missing estimates, and cut full-year 2026 sales and EPS guidance below consensus. Management blamed pressured household budgets, shifting buying habits, and tough competition in fresh bread. The stock fell sharply as investors lowered expectations for future profits.

This is the core negative event that directly caused the stock to drop and reset expectations.

  • Weak demand from value-conscious consumers and GLP-1 drugs Palm Valley Capital noted that demand for Flowers' bread and bakery products is being hurt by cost-conscious shoppers and the growing use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications. These trends reduce how much bread people buy, pressuring sales and profits. The fund expects near-term conditions to stay challenging.

It explains a deeper, ongoing demand problem that affects future revenue, not just one quarter.

  • Exploring sale of Tastykake unit for about $350 million Flowers Foods is exploring a sale of its Tastykake division, which could bring in around $350 million. The move fits its plan to shed non-core brands and focus on higher-growth snack brands like Simple Mills. A sale could raise cash and simplify the business, but it also removes a $400 million revenue stream, so the market impact is uncertain.

It is a major strategic action that could reshape the company and affect its value, though the outcome is not yet clear.

Palm Valley Capital Flags Flowers Foods Margin Pressure as 2026 EPS Guidance Cut

Palm Valley Capital Management disclosed in its third-quarter 2026 investor letter that Flowers Foods was among the three positions that hurt the Palm Valley Capital Fund's quarterly performance, alongside Rayonier and Reynolds Consumer Products. The fund said Flowers Foods, a market leading producer of bread and bakery products, faces rising costs, intense competition, and a value-conscious consumer, with demand also affected by growing adoption of GLP-1 medications. During the second quarter, sales declined 4% and earnings per share fell to $0.21 from $0.30, and management lowered 2026 EPS guidance from $0.80 to $0.90 down to $0.75 to $0.85. Flowers Foods closed at $5.57 on October 02, 2026, with a $1.18 billion market capitalization, a roughly 48.81% year-to-date pullback, and a 52-week range of $5.40 to $13.13. The fund said it expects near-term trends to remain challenging but believes demand for bread will eventually stabilize, with comparisons becoming easier later this year and into 2027.

Flowers Foods Q2 Earnings Expected to Decline

Flowers Foods is expected to report lower revenue and earnings for its second quarter of 2026 on August 20. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues is around $1.2 billion, down nearly 1% from a year ago, while the consensus earnings estimate of 23 cents per share implies a 23.3% decline. The company faces softness in traditional loaf bread, price-sensitive consumers, and an intensely promotional environment, with volumes modeled to fall 2.7%. Cost pressures from diesel fuel, edible oils, packaging resin, and potential tariff-related import costs are expected to weigh on margins, though productivity initiatives and strength in better-for-you brands like Simple Mills and Nature's Own may provide some offset. Zacks does not predict an earnings beat, as Flowers Foods carries a Zacks Rank of 3 and an Earnings ESP of 0.00%.
FLO · Capital · Negative Expected lower revenue and earnings for Q2 2026, with consensus estimates down.
