CMS Projects Medicare Advantage Premiums to Fall Over 16% in 2027

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said weighted average Medicare Advantage premiums are projected to decline more than 16% in 2027 compared to this year, with average prescription drug premiums in MA plans seen dropping 38%. Weighted average MA premiums are expected to go from $14.37 in 2026 to $12.00 in 2027, while supplemental benefits are expected to remain stable. MA plans available across the country are expected to be roughly the same, going from 5,553 in 2026 to 5,532 in 2027, and about eight in 10 MA beneficiaries can keep their current plan with the same or a lower premium in 2027. While the average monthly Part D premium for stand-alone prescription drug plans is projected to rise from $35.09 in 2026 to $36 in 2027, CMS noted that nearly nine out of 10 low-income enrollees will have access to a basic Part D plan that is $10.30 or less. MA plans that include a prescription drug benefit are expected to decrease from $11.32 in 2026 to $7 in 2027 due to the application of MA rebates, and Medicare Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
