Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington, D.C., for an official visit to the United States from September 23 to 25, 2026, at the invitation of President Donald Trump. Upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan were welcomed by Trump and Melania Trump. The Chinese leader said in a written speech that China and the United States should be partners, not rivals, and that China's efforts to develop the country and the U.S. goal of Make America Great Again can proceed in parallel. He also proposed that the relationship between the two countries be based mainly on cooperation, with competition kept at an appropriate level, differences manageable, and peace foreseeable. Before the visit, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Xi Jinping planned to have in-depth exchanges of views with Trump on major issues concerning China-U.S. relations, as well as issues of world peace and development. The meeting comes at a time when Washington and Beijing still have many issues to discuss, ranging from trade, technology, artificial intelligence, and Taiwan to the situation in Iran. Reuters reported that although both sides have signaled a desire to keep the relationship stable, strategic differences remain on many issues, so the outcome of the leaders' talks in Washington bears watching, in terms of whether they lead to progress on economic and trade issues and how much they help ease tensions between the two major powers.
