TSMC 2nm demand surges; US expansion and export-control risks build

  • TSMC 2nm orders jump 10-20% from Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, MediaTek Major customers are raising 2nm orders by 10-20%, pushing TSMC's monthly output to about 120,000 wafers by end-2026, above earlier estimates. This locks in strong demand for Taiwan's most important company and its local equipment and materials suppliers.

It is the clearest new demand signal for Taiwan's biggest stock and the local supply chain.

  • TSMC's US investment reaches $265B, weighs Texas plants TSMC's US commitment is now $265 billion, with about 30% of advanced capacity potentially in Arizona, and it is considering tens of billions more for Texas plants. This secures US demand and ties, but shifts some future capacity and capital spending away from Taiwan.

It shows the biggest structural force pulling Taiwan chip investment and capacity overseas.

  • Restricted Nvidia chips reached China via state-backed financing A report says restricted Nvidia B300 chips reached China through state-backed financing, including Asustek servers. Nvidia is investigating and Asus reaffirmed export-control compliance. This raises scrutiny risk for Taiwan server makers and their US chip partners.

It is a new regulatory and reputational risk for Taiwan's server supply chain.

  • Quanta and Delta deepen ties to quantum and AI driving Quanta Computer is collaborating with Quantinuum on trapped-ion quantum hardware, while Delta Electronics is named Nvidia's partner for AI-based autonomous driving. These add new growth areas beyond chips for Taiwan's hardware makers.

It shows Taiwan's tech ecosystem broadening into quantum and automotive AI, a fresh demand source.

AI boom drives Taiwan markets, but risks mount

  • AI demand lifts TSMC and broadens TSMC's Q2 profit jumped 77% on record AI chip demand, with capacity sold out. The boom spread to Wistron, Foxconn, MediaTek and others, while AMD and Nvidia deepened ties. PharmaEssentia's FDA approval added biotech diversification.

This is the main positive force behind Taiwan's market gains in Q3.

  • TSMC capex and overseas fabs pressure margins TSMC's planned $60–64 billion capital spending, overseas factory buildouts, and the 2nm technology ramp raised cost concerns, pressuring profit margins and weighing on investor sentiment.

This cost pressure was a key negative factor for Taiwan's largest company and the market.

  • Global chip selloff hits TSMC and TAIEX A global selloff in chip stocks cut TSMC's share price by about 20% and dragged down the TAIEX, reflecting broad investor worries about the sustainability of the AI boom.

This selloff was a major negative event that directly impacted Taiwan's market performance.

  • Competition and geopolitical risks weigh Intel, Samsung, and OpenAI intensified competition. Memory shortages, export controls, China tensions, and fears of an AI slowdown added further pressure, clouding the bullish outlook.

These external and structural risks acted as counterweights to the AI-driven optimism.

Nvidia Nears Record High on Foxconn Results as Cerebras Jumps on Altman Comments

Nvidia is poised to open at a record high after Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, reported better-than-estimated numbers, with the strong results extrapolated through to the AI chipmaker. Renewed talk that Nvidia's valuation looks low, given its still-expanding earnings, is also helping the stock as the AI trade continues largely unabated. Separately, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas reiterated his overweight rating on SpaceX with a $300 price target, arguing the stock is cheap at its current level of 159 and implying roughly 100% upside, citing the difficulty of valuing its AI business by price per token and its rocket work such as heat shields, orbital re-entry, booster landings and hot staging. FBI arrests woman suspected of spying on Taiwan president's son's family for China

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, arrested a 34-year-old woman at Los Angeles International Airport before she could board a flight to Shanghai, accusing her of acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government and surveilling the son of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and his family. The suspect, Wanying Zhang, is a resident of Irvine, California, and is accused of photographing the residence and vehicles of the family of President Lai's son in 2025 and sending the information back to handlers in China. Bill Essayli, a U.S. assistant attorney for Los Angeles, said the FBI took Zhang into custody on Sunday local time, and she is scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on Tuesday for an initial hearing on the charges. Karen Kuo, a spokesperson for Taiwan's Presidential Office, said the case is an example of cross-border repression and condemned actions aimed at pressuring, intimidating or harming those who support freedom and democracy, as well as their families. The arrest came just days after U.S. and Chinese leaders held a summit aimed at stabilizing relations between the two countries, amid Taiwan's concerns over Chinese espionage operations. Between 2025 and early 2026, Taiwan charged 58 individuals in cases suspected of involving espionage for China, and last year four members of the Democratic Progressive Party were sentenced to prison for passing confidential government information to Chinese intelligence, one of whom had served as an aide to Lai when he was vice president.

TSMC Weighs Overseas Factory Margin Dilution Against Rich Valuation

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expanding overseas production while trying to protect the earnings that underpin its valuation, raising the question of how much lower-margin capacity it can absorb. TSMC reported a 67.7% gross margin and a 60.3% operating margin in the second quarter, yet at the September 30 market-data snapshot the stock traded at roughly 29 times trailing earnings and 57 times trailing free cash flow. Management described overseas-factory dilution starting at about two to three percentage points of gross margin and moving toward three to four points in later years, and separately expected the N2 ramp to dilute gross margin by three to four points in the second half of 2026. On second-quarter revenue of NT$1.27 trillion, a three-point gross-margin reduction represents approximately NT$38.1 billion of gross profit and four points represent NT$50.8 billion, equal to about 5.4% and 7.2% of reported net income of NT$706.6 billion, respectively. Insider Monkey's hedge fund database showed 249 TSMC holders in Q2 2026, up from 234 in Q1, with Fisher Asset Management raising its position 2% to 18,866,198 and Coatue cutting its position 4% to 8,914,995.

TSMC Weighs Additional Chip Plants in Texas With Tens of Billions in Spending

TSMC is considering building a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, with expectations of adding several tens of billions of dollars in investment under a multi-year plan to expand its chipmaking business in the United States. Sources say the Texas project covers the construction of multiple chip plants, and if the investment goes ahead, each plant would cost at least 20 billion dollars. Previously, TSMC pledged to invest 265 billion dollars in Arizona, where several plants are currently under construction. The Texas investment depends on whether the U.S. government extends a tax credit measure for advanced manufacturing that is set to expire at the end of this year. The plan is still at an early stage and no details have been officially disclosed. TSMC is a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, with revenue from wafer manufacturing in America accounting for more than 75% of its revenue from that business this year.

Chinese State Funds Backed Purchase of Restricted Nvidia AI Chips, Report Says

A Chinese state-backed financing entity funded the purchase of restricted Nvidia processors, according to a Bloomberg News report citing Chinese regulatory filings. The financing, provided by Semi-Tech Leasing Group Co., supported the purchase of more than 700 servers by AI infrastructure developer Glory View Technology Co., and filings with the People's Bank of China cited by Bloomberg show at least one transaction explicitly funded 32 Asustek Computer Inc. servers powered by Nvidia's high-performance B300 Blackwell chips. Nvidia told Bloomberg it is investigating the matter with its equipment manufacturing partners, while Asus reiterated its commitment to international export control regulations. Semi-Tech Leasing, originally established with backing from China's national semiconductor fund and now predominantly controlled by municipal government entities in Shenzhen and Beijing, has deployed more than 11 billion yuan, or $1.6 billion, into compute infrastructure. Under sale-and-leaseback arrangements initiated in mid-2025, Glory View secured over 3 billion yuan, or $450 million, to expand data center capacity, with most of the procured hardware slated for a major China Mobile Ltd. computing hub in Ningxia. After initial scrutiny, Semi-Tech Leasing resubmitted altered filings to Chinese credit registries that removed specific hardware descriptions, supplier details, and server model designations.

Micron Posts Record Earnings as Taiwan Union Moves Toward Strike Vote

Micron Technology reported record quarterly results after the close on Wednesday, but a labor dispute at its Taiwan operations is now threatening production at one of its key manufacturing bases. Fourth-quarter revenue came in at $54.23 billion, ahead of the $50.45 billion consensus and nearly five times the $11.32 billion reported a year earlier, while adjusted earnings of $33.42 a share beat estimates of $31.16. For the full fiscal year, revenue reached $133.19 billion against $37.38 billion the prior year, with operating margin at 76% on a non-GAAP basis, and Micron guided first-quarter revenue to $60 billion to $63 billion, well above the $56.77 billion consensus, with earnings of $37.15 to $39.15 a share. Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra credited AI demand and the company's Strategic Customer Agreements for the record fiscal 2026 results. According to reports, Micron said its roughly 15,000 Taiwan employees would receive the company's largest-ever compensation package for fiscal 2026, worth the equivalent of 35 to 68 months of base salary for production staff, but the Taoyuan union is pushing for a permanent mechanism allocating 15% of operating profit to employee bonuses rather than another one-off payout. Union chairman Lin Che-jui has said the aim is a long-term, transparent system, negotiations broke down on Sept. 21, and the union has announced plans for a strike vote, while Micron has said it remains willing to continue talks and separate mediation with the Taichung union is scheduled for Oct. 22. Taiwan is one of Micron's most important manufacturing bases for DRAM and the high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers, making any disruption a risk for investors at a time when supply is already tight, and a poll on workplace platform Blind found 75% of respondents support the Micron strikers receiving the additional 15%.

US says China unlikely to invade Taiwan before 2028 as corruption erodes military readiness

US officials assess that the likelihood of China using military force to invade Taiwan before 2028 has decreased, even though President Xi Jinping has set a goal for the People's Liberation Army, or PLA, to be ready by 2027 to seize Taiwan by force if necessary. Reuters reported this, citing sources familiar with the US government's view, comprising two current US officials, one former US official, and one other person with knowledge of the matter, all of whom provided information on condition of anonymity. A key factor is the delay in improving the readiness of China's military, which has been affected by Xi Jinping's anti-corruption crackdown within the armed forces, as well as the possibility that Beijing may want to wait and see the outcome of Taiwan's presidential election in 2028. US officials also assess that China's military exercises last year were smaller in scale and created less pressure than in several previous years. Meanwhile, investigations and the removal of several senior officials have left the Central Military Commission, which originally had seven members, with only two officials still in active service, including Xi Jinping, who serves as its chairman. The US sources believe that if the Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, wins the election for a fourth consecutive term, especially if President Lai Ching-te is re-elected, the risk that Beijing will consider using force from 2028 onward could increase. Trump has also not yet approved a new arms package worth about 14 billion dollars, saying the matter is a bargaining chip.

China begins Golden Week as Xi Jinping reiterates crackdown on Taiwan independence supporters

China begins its seven-day National Day holiday, or Golden Week, amid travel expected to hit record highs, while President Xi Jinping has sent an increasingly tough signal on the Taiwan issue. In a speech at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on September 30, ahead of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he said China will resolutely crack down on separatist forces that support Taiwan independence, oppose interference by external forces, and press ahead with the mission of national reunification. This is a tougher tone than last year, when he only stated firm opposition to Taiwan independence activities. The latest stance comes just days after Xi made an official visit to Washington and called on President Donald Trump to take a clear position against any declaration of Taiwan independence, going further than the long-standing U.S. position. Meanwhile, the Trump administration suspended a 14 billion dollar arms sale package to Taiwan in May and has shown less support for Taiwan over the past year. China's Ministry of Transport expects about 2.13 billion trips during the holiday period, or nearly 300 million trips per day on average. Cross-border travel is expected to average about 2.16 million trips per day. Bookings for domestic flights of more than 2,000 kilometers rose about 14 percent, while international flight ticket bookings rose 22.5 percent from the same period last year.

Krungsri upgrades electronics stocks to Bullish, picks DELTA and KCE as Top picks

Krungsri Securities Public Company Limited has raised its recommendation on the electronics sector to Bullish from Neutral, citing three reasons: the low proportion of domestic revenue, the earnings of every company in the sector trending well in 3Q26F continuing from 2Q26, and momentum carrying into 4Q26-2027. It also expects the industry's total profit to accelerate in FY27F on rising demand in both AI-related and non-AI product groups. The research team recommends buying all three stocks, with DELTA at a target price of 320 baht and KCE at a target price of 97 baht as the Top picks, based on the theme of product price increases, which will drive the highest net profit per share growth in FY27F. The industry's total profit is expected to grow 52% in FY27F, accelerating from 42% in FY26F. DELTA will grow 51% in FY27F, up from 42% in FY26F, while KCE grows from 77% in FY26F to 82% in FY27F, and HANA grows from 24% in FY26F to 45% in FY27F. The team also raised its earnings estimates for KCE by 5% in FY26F and by 28% in FY27F to reflect the positive view that KCE is entering a sustained cycle of product price increases, incorporating one more price increase in October 2026 into the estimates, on top of the two previously expected in July 2026 and January 2027. Among non-AI stocks, KCE remains preferred over HANA because it operates further upstream and has its own laminate production facility, which helps it manage raw material costs better.

ASML and TSM Earnings Could Test AI Trade Demand Signals

ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. are heading into earnings with investors focused less on recent results and more on how the market may respond. Both chipmakers have posted strong quarters yet saw their shares weaken afterward, and Awad expects the upcoming results to show whether semiconductor earnings can become catalysts again as expectations reset. ASML supplies lithography equipment while TSM operates as a major semiconductor foundry, giving the two a broader view of industry conditions because their businesses sit further up the chip supply chain. Investors may also scrutinize spending plans from large cloud companies for 2027 and whether AI costs are declining, with Awad pointing to lower pricing for some AI models and discounts from major providers as factors that could influence infrastructure spending. ASML is scheduled to report third-quarter results on Oct. 14, followed by TSM on Oct. 15, and Awad said the reactions could offer clues about how markets are assessing AI-related demand heading into 2027.

US Pushes to Cut Taiwan Chip Reliance as TSMC's US Investment Hits $265 Billion

The United States is pouring billions into domestic semiconductor manufacturing to reduce its reliance on Taiwan for advanced AI chips, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s U.S. investment commitment reaching $265 billion. The planned expansion includes six logic fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and a research and development center in Arizona, and TSMC has indicated that roughly 30% of its 2-nanometer and more advanced manufacturing capacity could eventually be located in the state. Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities, cautioned that expanding domestic production does not mean the U.S. can fully replace Taiwan, saying he views the U.S. buildout as a strategic hedge rather than a true replacement, and noting that even chips manufactured in Arizona could continue depending on Asian facilities for parts of the final packaging process. Boloor said Washington is prioritizing capabilities where disruptions could have the greatest consequences, including advanced logic, packaging and domestic capacity to support critical AI infrastructure, while Taiwan is expected to remain central to leading-edge research and manufacturing. In February 2026, Taiwan rejected a U.S. proposal to shift 40% of its semiconductor supply chain to America, with Taipei's top tariff negotiator calling the plan impossible.

Memory stocks face pricing test ahead of Micron earnings

Memory stocks are facing a fresh test as pricing momentum cools ahead of Micron Technology's earnings on Wednesday. Sara Awad of Tech Contrarians said the performance of memory players without significant high-bandwidth memory exposure could offer a better read on non-AI memory demand and pricing, which will be critical to Micron's gross-margin outlook. Among the names Awad highlighted, WT Micro reported August sales growth of only 8%, while Nanya Technology posted record August sales of NT$44.7B but monthly growth slowed to 2% from 49% in July, and Macronix International recorded a roughly 5% monthly increase in August, a slowdown from July. Awad noted that DRAM average selling prices could rise only 13%-18% in Q3, according to TrendForce, compared with roughly 50%-60% growth in Q2, while additional Chinese supply is coming online, with CXMT expected to reach roughly 20,000 wafer starts per month by year-end. Micron guided for an 86% gross margin last quarter after reporting 84.6%, and Awad said the market could react negatively if the company fails to guide for another increase.

Wells Fargo Sees Semiconductor Equipment Suppliers as Winners in TSMC 2nm Expansion

Wells Fargo says semiconductor capital-equipment companies could be the biggest near-term beneficiaries of a potential TSMC expansion of 2-nanometer production. Analyst Joe Quatrochi wrote that reports of the possible capacity increase should be viewed as a potentially incremental positive opportunity for semi cap companies, though timing, size and node details are still unconfirmed. Building additional 2nm capacity would require significant spending on lithography, deposition, etching and inspection equipment, adding a layer of demand for suppliers supporting TSMC's fabs. Quatrochi pointed to the so-called Silicon Prairie as a logical location for a potential second U.S. campus, citing existing semiconductor operations in Texas from Texas Instruments, Samsung, Coherent and Terafab, plus TSMC's design service center in Austin. TSMC's major 2nm customers include Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm, with Google, Broadcom, Marvell, Amazon and OpenAI also expected to use the advanced process.

Taiwan Confirms Ongoing Talks with US on Arms Purchases After Trump-Xi Summit

Taiwan's defense minister has revealed that Taiwan is continuing discussions with the United States on arms purchases and has received assurances from Washington that its policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, following last week's meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. Wellington Koo, Taiwan's defense minister, told reporters today that since the summit, the Taiwanese government has received repeated clarifications from the US side that Washington's policy toward Taiwan remains the same, and that for arms procurement programs currently underway, each project requires concrete cooperation, with no notification of any changes so far. One of the delayed programs is an order for 66 F-16V fighter jets from Lockheed Martin, placed in 2019, equipped with modern electronics, weapons, and radar to enhance the ability to counter the Chinese air force, including the J-20 stealth fighter. Taiwanese media reported that the first two F-16V jets are in Hawaii awaiting delivery to Taiwan. Koo did not disclose a delivery schedule, saying only that production has reached a stage where delivery is possible, and noted that due to the delays, related compensation measures are in place. China has consistently urged the United States to stop selling arms to Taiwan. In May, after visiting Beijing, Trump said the United States had paused consideration of a new arms package worth about 14 billion dollars, but after meeting Xi in Washington last week, Trump said only that Xi understood his position on Taiwan.

Flashlight Capital Urges SECOM to Buy Control of S-1 and Taiwan SECOM

Activist investor Flashlight Capital Partners has sent a letter to SECOM's board demanding an overhaul of the Japanese security group's overseas strategy. The Singapore-based firm notes that SECOM's May 2023 roadmap targeted overseas revenue of 10% of sales by March 2028, but with 18 months remaining overseas revenue stands at just 5.4%, barely above 5.3% three years ago. Flashlight Capital criticized SECOM's neglect of S-1 Corporation, whose revenue equals 24% of SECOM's but is excluded from consolidation because SECOM's 26% stake falls below the J-GAAP threshold, and called on SECOM to raise its stakes in S-1 and Taiwan SECOM to at least 50% for under JPY156bn, which would lift overseas revenue to roughly 28%. The firm also asked the board to develop a new roadmap with stretch targets and to assess whether current leadership is right to execute the growth plan, with Chief Executive Officer Sanghyun Lee arguing SECOM trades at 6.6x EV/EBITDA versus 9.9x for Verisure and that its share price could re-rate to JPY10,000, 57% upside from current levels. Lai Ching-te backs Taiwan joining democracies to develop drones for modern warfare

President Lai Ching-te, Taiwan's leader, said Taiwan needs to tighten cooperation with democratic countries in developing drone technology, which is crucial to waging modern warfare, amid rising military pressure from China. Speaking today at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new drone development center in Chiayi in southern Taiwan, he said that from the battlefields of Ukraine to security in the Indo-Pacific region, drones have become a key fighting force in modern national defense. He called on Taiwan to work with democratic countries to develop a secure and resilient drone supply chain in order to support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. His remarks came as the Taiwanese government pushes ahead with military upgrades and higher defense budgets as one of its main policies, after China stepped up military pressure on Taiwan earlier this month. Taiwan's Cabinet proposed adding 145.7 billion Taiwan dollars, about 4.59 billion US dollars, to this year's defense budget. The budget covers the procurement of drones and missile interception systems, including more than 600 surveillance and coastal patrol drones, more than 40,000 coastal attack drones, and more than 100 explosive-laden unmanned boats. Lai said Taiwan has strengths in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and high-precision manufacturing bases that can be leveraged to develop a drone industry.

Kasikorn Securities says flood statistics to pressure SET by about 1%, sees support at 1,565-1,580 points as opportunity to accumulate bank, power plant and electronics stocks

The analyst at Kasikorn Securities Public Company Limited presented statistics on the impact of floods on the SET Index, noting that since 2006 flooding has occurred in Thailand more than 7 times, and the SET delivered negative returns of about 1% over a one-month period, except in 2011 when major flooding pushed the SET down 14%. The groups that outperformed were led by ICT and banks, while the finance and insurance groups fell about 2%. The electronics group fell the most, down 8%, most of which stemmed from 2011, because that flood round hit the industrial sector hard. On the economy, excluding 2011, the monthly impact was in the range of 10 to 50 billion baht, or an impact on GDP of no more than 0.1-0.3%. And if assessed from the upside of extending the half-half co-payment policy program by 2 months, it could put the GDP forecast in a range of 2.0% plus or minus. For investment strategy, Kasikorn Securities assesses the impact of this flood round on its 2026 EPS forecast as fairly limited, and estimates the SET support range at 1,565-1,580 points. It still views the decline as an opportunity to gradually accumulate bank, power plant and electronics stocks, namely KTB, BBL, DELTA and BGRIM.

Wayve Partners With Mercedes-Benz as Waymo Concentrates Fleet in Two States

Wayve has locked in a commercial partnership with Mercedes-Benz to integrate its automated driving tech into at least one model set to be deployed within the next two years, a Level 2 product that still requires the human driver to remain engaged. The deal follows similar partnerships with Nissan and Stellantis, and earlier this year Wayve announced a partnership with Nissan and Uber to launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo. Meanwhile, about 80% of Waymo's roughly 4,000 robotaxis are in California and Texas, with its Texas fleet growing by more than 49% in the past three weeks. Aurora, which is developing and commercializing self-driving trucks, said it is targeting more than 30,000 driverless trucks in operation by 2030 and plans to have more than 200 driverless trucks by the end of the year. In other news, Zoox grounded its autonomous vehicle test fleet in Atlanta after safety drivers were potentially exposed to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or hydrogen sulfide gas inside its vehicles last month, prompting one worker to file a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. On the deals front, Carro is considering a dual listing on the Nasdaq and the Singapore Exchange, Spinny and PMI Electro Mobility Solutions have both filed confidentially for IPOs, EcoCeres reportedly plans to raise about $1 billion in a Hong Kong initial public offering, and Ultraviolette raised $85 million and brought on Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan as an adviser.

US Taiwan policy unchanged after Xi's visit, says US ambassador to China Perdue

US Ambassador to China David Perdue said the United States' position on Taiwan remains unchanged after President Xi Jinping's state visit to the US last week. Speaking on a Fox News program on the 27th, Perdue said, "We do not support independence, and we do not support coercion." During his visit, Xi pressed US President Donald Trump to curb support for Taiwan, which China regards as its own territory, and demanded a clear "opposition" to Taiwan independence. It was the first time Xi has publicly called for a change in the United States' decades-old position on Taiwan. According to Perdue, the Trump administration has already approved the sale of 11 billion dollars' worth of US-made weapons to Taiwan, and talks on additional sales are continuing.
