Robinhood cuts jobs, AI tool grows, but crypto slump and competition weigh

  • Job cuts and AI trading tool boost margins and shares Robinhood is cutting 10% of jobs to improve profit margins, while its new AI trading tool has attracted over 50,000 users. These moves helped push the stock higher.

This is a major new development that directly lifted the stock.

  • IPO underwriting approval and record volumes drive upgrades Robinhood won approval to underwrite IPOs, benefited from the scrapped day-trading minimum, and posted record June trading volumes. Analysts upgraded the stock on this strong performance.

These new business wins and regulatory relief are key positive catalysts.

  • Global expansion and new products add millions of customers Robinhood is expanding globally, launching new products, and adding a Trump Accounts app. These efforts brought in millions of new customers, supporting future growth.

This shows new growth avenues that could drive future revenue.

  • Crypto weakness and rising competition pressure results Crypto revenue fell 47% as Bitcoin dropped sharply. Competition from Coinbase, Meta's prediction markets app, and X Money is intensifying. A $2 billion convertible debt raise raised dilution and leverage concerns.

These are significant headwinds that temper the positive outlook.

Robinhood launches AI agents, 24/7 weekend trading, and crypto perpetuals

New product launch that expands Robinhood's technology offering and could drive customer activity.

  • 24/7 weekend stock trading Robinhood became the first brokerage to offer round-the-clock weekend trading in US stocks and ETFs, extending its weekday 24-hour service. This differentiates it from rivals and could attract more active traders, boosting trading volume and fees.

First-of-its-kind product that expands addressable market and trading hours.

  • Crypto perpetual futures for US customers Robinhood will offer crypto perpetual futures in the US through its Bitstamp-powered derivatives arm, covering eight assets with up to 10x leverage. This adds a new fee stream and leverages its crypto infrastructure, supporting growth.

New product line that expands crypto derivatives offering and fee revenue.

  • Cboe KPI-linked binary contracts Cboe will launch binary contracts tied to company performance metrics, with Robinhood as the first retail broker to offer them. This gives customers a new way to trade specific events and could increase engagement and fee income.

New partnership and product that broadens event-based trading offerings.

Robinhood's diversification drives record revenue, but crypto and legal risks persist

  • Record revenue from prediction markets and Trump Accounts Prediction markets and Trump Accounts drove record revenue, with Q2 event-contract revenue hitting $156 million and total revenue of $1.3 billion. This diversification reduces reliance on trading fees.

This point explains the main positive driver of Robinhood's financial performance in Q3.

  • Global expansion and new products boost customer metrics Expansion into UK crypto, WonderFi, tokenized equities, and Robinhood Chain, plus record 28.6 million funded customers and $383.7 billion in assets, and SEC approval for tokenized-stock trading, boosted confidence.

This point highlights the growth initiatives and record metrics that supported investor optimism.

  • Morgan Stanley upgrade signals confidence Morgan Stanley upgraded HOOD to Overweight, reflecting confidence in the company's diversification and growth prospects. This analyst endorsement can influence investor sentiment positively.

This point shows external validation that likely contributed to stock performance.

  • Crypto weakness and regulatory challenges weigh on results Crypto revenue fell 38% for a third straight quarter, exposing reliance on volatile crypto and speculative memecoins. E*TRADE's cheaper crypto trading pressures fees. A Ninth Circuit ruling classified sports event contracts as gambling, threatening prediction markets. AMC tokenized-share disputes, state shutdown efforts, a stalled Senate crypto bill, and front-running charges against ex-employees add legal and regulatory uncertainty.

This point captures the key negative factors that posed risks to Robinhood's business and stock.

Tom Lee Predicts Ethereum Will Break $5,000 by Year-End, Eyes $60,000 Within a Few Years

Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat and chairman of Bitmine, said in an interview with Coinage that Ethereum will set a new all-time high and surge above $5,000 before the end of this year, and he sees the potential for it to reach $60,000 within the next few years, citing past price cycles in which it climbed from below $100 at the end of 2018 to nearly $4,900 in 2021. Lee noted that Ethereum has risen about 80% from its June low near $1,500 to around $2,700 by the end of September, even as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.25% on September 16, bringing the target range to 3.75%-4% by a 12-0 vote. On the institutional side, money has flowed in through spot Ether ETFs in the United States, with September 22 recording net inflows of $162.2 million, the third consecutive day of positive flows, as BlackRock's Ethereum fund took in $88.1 million and Fidelity's fund added $33.6 million. Lee also pointed to Robinhood's decision to build Robinhood Chain on Ethereum, which attracted as much as $2.1 billion in tokenized assets in its first two months, with $1.5 billion deposited into applications running on the network. At the same time, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued an innovation exemption on September 17 that allows certain tokenized versions of US-listed shares to trade on blockchain networks, after the draft Clarity Act failed to advance in the Senate by a vote of 49-50.

Robinhood Adds AI Trading Agents That Trade Stocks Autonomously

Robinhood has rolled out new AI trading agents that let users connect a chatbot such as Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI and direct it to place trades, Fortune Finance & Crypto Editor Jeff John Roberts said on Fortune Daily with Ellie Austin. Roberts said users can log into Robinhood, name the agent, and instruct it to buy shares such as Tesla. He framed the launch as the first arrival of a feature he expects every other company to add within the next couple of years, rather than an immediate overhaul of investing. Roberts warned of unintended consequences from letting agents trade while users sleep, including herd behavior if many agents converge on the same stock, and said that while guard rails exist, not everyone will use them.

Robinhood Labs LLC Separates AI Trading Risk From Brokerage

Robinhood has placed its autonomous trading technology inside a separate legal entity, Robinhood Labs LLC, while keeping brokerage operations in Robinhood Financial LLC, creating a legal firewall between the two. Robinhood Labs LLC is explicitly not a broker-dealer, investment adviser, futures commission merchant, or money transmitter, and company disclosures state it does not provide investment advice, hold customer funds, or execute transactions. The user agreement requires customers to assume all risk for trades executed by AI agents and for any use of their data by third-party LLM providers. Robinhood reports that over 150,000 customers have opened agentic trading accounts since their May 2026 launch, with agents using tools nearly 30 million times per day, though these figures are self-reported and have not been independently verified. The model operates in a regulatory vacuum: the 2026 Annual Regulatory Oversight Report called existing rules technologically neutral, FINRA Rule 3110 requires reasonably designed supervisory systems without specific guidance on corporate separation, and the SEC has stayed silent on using a non-broker subsidiary to shield a parent from autonomous agents. Registered Investment Advisers remain barred from using AI agents to manage client money under fiduciary standards, while retail users on platforms like Robinhood can grant autonomous trading authority, and major firms including Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers, eToro, and Webull have announced no similar separation. SEC Rule 15c3-5, the Market Access Rule, is the primary lever that could dismantle the template, and the alter-ego doctrine could pierce the liability shield if courts find the brokerage controls the Labs entity's operations.

Robinhood launches 24/7 weekend trading as Disney weighs more TV layoffs

Robinhood has launched round-the-clock weekend trading in US equities, becoming the first brokerage to offer a 24/7 individual-stock product, while Disney is preparing a third round of layoffs in its television division. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said the platform already offers continuous equity trading in about 2,000 US equities from Sunday 8 p.m. Eastern to Friday 8 p.m. Eastern, and that extending coverage through the weekend lets holders hedge when news breaks. The Walt Disney layoff plan, reported by The Wall Street Journal, drew no comment from the company, and Yahoo Finance's Brian Sozzi said cost-cutting under new CEO Josh D'Amaro makes further reductions likely as advertising pressure and high operating expenses squeeze the TV and sports businesses. The developments came as Nike posted a weak quarter, with brand sales down 4%, online sales down 13%, Converse sales down 28% and Greater China sales down 26%, and signaled more layoffs ahead. Nike guided to high-single-digit sales declines in fiscal 2027 and earnings of $1.15 to $1.35 a share against a Yahoo Finance estimate of $1.66. Sozzi also spoke with Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe, who warned that a shortage of skilled trades workers will be the pinch point for a coming infrastructure buildout.

Cboe to Launch KPI-Linked Binary Contracts With Robinhood as First Retail Broker

Cboe Global Markets is expanding its derivatives portfolio with a new category of binary contracts tied to company-specific key performance indicators, expected to launch in October 2026 subject to regulatory approval, with Robinhood set to become the first retail broker to offer them. Cboe plans to initially list contracts linked to 23 U.S.-listed companies, giving investors a way to trade specific corporate metrics and events through SEC-regulated products, and will waive fees on the contracts through the end of 2026 while Robinhood plans to offer them without fees during that period. The exchange also plans to leverage its listing, trading and clearing capabilities, with Cboe Clear U.S. seeking SEC registration to clear the new contracts, which could create additional revenue opportunities as Cboe supports a wider range of traditional and non-traditional financial products. Peers have moved into event-based offerings as well: CME Group has expanded its event-contract offerings with short-duration, outcome-based products across equities, rates and commodities, while Nasdaq has entered the event-based options market with cash-settled, European-style binary options tied to the Nasdaq-100 and Nasdaq-100 Micro Index with a fixed $100 settlement amount and premiums ranging from $0.01 to $1.00. Cboe stock has gained 10% year-to-date against the industry's decrease of 12.5%, and trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 19.04 versus the industry average of 19.63, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate points to a 15.9% year-over-year increase in 2026 revenues and a 29.2% year-over-year decline in earnings, followed by a 2.7% revenue increase and 5.7% earnings increase in 2027.

Narravance Brings ChatterFlow Viral Stocks Detector to Robinhood Agents

Narravance Inc. announced the launch of Viral Stocks Detector by ChatterFlow as an Agent App within Robinhood Agents, Robinhood's new agentic trading ecosystem. The Houston-based narrative intelligence company said Robinhood customers can add ChatterFlow to their agent to bring retail investor narratives and sentiment into their own research. ChatterFlow monitors retail investor chatter across major social platforms and is designed to work as a leading indicator of potential volatility, signaling to a customer's Robinhood Agents when discussions around a stock are pointing toward an imminent price move. ChatterFlow is available to Robinhood customers with a 30-day free trial at launch, after which it costs $8 per month within the Robinhood app, and can be found in the Agent Apps section of the Robinhood app. Narravance CEO and Co-founder Adam Sohn said narrative intelligence has become critical to the capital markets and has developed into one of the most powerful leading indicators of stock volatility in a generation, adding that ChatterFlow is teaming up with Robinhood to place this capability in the hands of the retail trader. Bitwise Survey Finds Zero Institutions Cut Crypto During 50% Drawdown

A first-of-its-kind Bitwise Institutional crypto adoption report found that none of the 15 major institutions it interviewed reduced their crypto allocations during the recent 50% plus drawdown, with several adding to their positions. The survey, conducted over three months, covered pensions, endowments, foundations, family offices, sovereign wealth funds and public companies, and every participant held Bitcoin, with allocations ranging from 0.5% to 13% and most between 1% and 2%. The findings came as the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures report, showed cooler-than-expected August readings, with headline monthly at 0.3% versus 0.4% expected, headline annual at 3.4% versus 3.7% expected, core monthly at 0.2% versus 0.3% expected, and core annual at 3% versus 3.3% expected. Second quarter GDP was revised sharply higher from 1.5% to 2.2%, and ADP reported 90,000 new private sector jobs, also stronger than expected. Separately, House Oversight Chair James Comer expanded an insider-trading investigation into online prediction markets, sending new letters to crypto.com, Hiker Liquid and Aristotle Exchange after earlier probes of Kalshi and Polymarket that began in May. Robinhood also unveiled a slate of product announcements at its Hood Summit, including 24/7 365 trading, 10X leverage on crypto products, perpetuals, take-profit and stop-loss orders, and AI agent trading tools.

Robinhood Plans Weekend Equities Trading as Cal-Maine and Concentrix Slide

Robinhood plans to offer weekend trading for equities, a first for modern US markets, allowing customers to trade a selected list of stocks and exchange-traded funds over the weekend, and it will also allow trading of perpetual futures on select cryptocurrencies and contracts linked to financial earnings. Cal-Maine shares fell 7.5% after the egg producer reported first-quarter net sales that missed the average analyst estimate and said it won't pay a cash dividend in the first quarter, with CEO Sherman Miller citing an industrywide supply imbalance and pressure on pricing. Concentrix shares slid 7.5% after the call center operator's fourth-quarter revenue forecast missed the average analyst estimate amid concerns that AI-assisted automation tools will reshape the business; about 50% of Concentrix revenue now comes from business earned since introducing AI tools, and the company expects free cash flow to rise to about 630 to 650 million dollars in fiscal 2026, though the stock is down 40% year to date.

Robinhood to offer 24-hour US stock trading on weekends in first-of-its-kind move

Online brokerage Robinhood said on the 29th that it plans to make round-the-clock trading in some US stocks available on weekends as well. The company has offered 24-hour trading on weekdays since 2023, and about 10 months after introducing the feature it announced that as much as 25 percent of total trading volume on active days was generated outside traditional trading hours. This marks the first time Robinhood will enable weekend trading. It will first publish a curated list of stocks and exchange-traded funds eligible for weekend trading, and the feature, to be launched in partnership with overnight trading infrastructure firm Blue Ocean ATS, is currently awaiting review by regulators. There are concerns that thin liquidity outside traditional hours could prevent traders from getting the best prices, but global exchanges such as Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange are also pushing ahead with plans to extend trading hours. Abhishek Fatehpuria, vice president of product management, said in an interview with Reuters that this year's focus is on giving active traders the tools that were previously available only to hedge funds, quant firms and many large active trading firms, and on making Robinhood the best place for active traders.

Coinbase Draws Split Ratings as Fee Pressure Tests New Growth Engines

Keefe Bruyette resumed coverage of Coinbase Global on September 28 with an Outperform rating and a $237 price target, while Mizuho kept a Neutral rating and a $155 target after the company cut trading fees for active traders. The $82 gap between the two targets reflects disagreement over whether Coinbase's newer businesses can scale fast enough to offset pressure on trading economics. At Citi's Global TMT Conference on September 10, Coinbase said prediction markets had crossed a $100 million annualized revenue run rate six months after launch, with second-quarter revenue up 106% quarter-over-quarter, while Coinbase One passed 1 million paying subscribers and expenses came in about $500 million below the fourth quarter run rate. Mizuho's caution centers on pricing: retail take rates near 150 basis points sit well above the 40 to 50 basis points charged by Robinhood, and the firm believes competitive pressure that began with active traders could eventually reach retail customers, following the September 17 fee cut that lowered spot rates and reduced the entry threshold for the first Advanced tier to $10,000 from $25,000. Citigroup's September 28 decision to use Coinbase for stablecoin payments adds another institutional distribution channel, with balances held at Coinbase earning a reward currently set at 3.75%, though the revenue contribution is not yet quantified.

DraftKings Falls 4% on Pulled-Forward Prediction-Market Spending

DraftKings shares fell 4% to $20.92 in Wednesday morning trading after chief executive Jason Robins signaled the company will lift marketing and customer promotions behind its prediction-markets business, potentially pulling forward investment previously contemplated for next year. Speaking with a Wells Fargo analyst on Tuesday, Robins said sportsbook handle rose 15% year over year month-to-date at the start of the National Football League season, that DraftKings still expects roughly $1 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the current year, and that its prediction-markets product is approaching a double-digit share of consumer volume in sports prediction markets. Flutter Entertainment, the parent of FanDuel, slipped 1% to $87.60 on the same spending concern, while Robinhood Markets rose 0.8% to $125.27, a split that separates platforms paying to acquire prediction-market customers from those whose customers arrive through an existing brokerage app. Robins also said the regulatory and legal position of prediction markets remains unsettled and outside the company's control. DraftKings is building the business against established venues including Kalshi and Polymarket, and Flutter is pursuing its own push through FanDuel Predicts.

Robinhood CEO Tenev Sees Crypto Contracts Taking Over Prediction Markets

Robinhood Markets CEO Vlad Tenev said crypto-linked event contracts are already taking a disproportionate share of prediction-market activity and that sports will eventually represent a minority of that business. The shift matters because sports contracts sit at the center of Robinhood's regulatory challenges: Missouri recently ordered the company and other operators to stop offering sports event contracts without a state sports-wagering license, Robinhood is appealing litigation in Michigan, and the Ninth Circuit in August affirmed the denial of preliminary relief in its Nevada case, prompting the company to petition the U.S. Supreme Court. Prediction markets have become financially material for Robinhood, with event-contract revenues surging more than tenfold year over year to 156 million dollars in the second quarter of 2026 and contracts traded jumping more than tenfold to a record 13.6 billion. In June, Robinhood began routing event contracts to Rothera, a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse independently managed through its joint venture with Susquehanna International Group, which accounted for 17 million dollars of second-quarter event-contract revenues. Competition is building as Interactive Brokers has created a unified prediction-market interface spanning Kalshi, CME Group and its ForecastEx platform, while Coinbase's offering, launched with Kalshi-sourced contracts, saw prediction-market contracts and revenues rise 106% sequentially in the second quarter.

SEC Innovation Exemption Opens Path for Robinhood Tokenized U.S. Stock Trading

The Securities and Exchange Commission issued an "Innovation Exemption" on Sept. 17 that lets qualifying venues trade tokenized versions of U.S. stocks for five years without registering as stock exchanges, a move Robinhood Markets CEO Vlad Tenev has campaigned for since the start of 2025. Robinhood shares climbed 5% that day and trade at about $120. The relief is temporary and conditional: a venue must verify every token it lists carries the same rights and privileges as conventional shares, including dividends and votes, must give a company written notice and a chance to object before trading a third-party tokenized version of its stock, and must publish its plans publicly at least 30 days before launching, with the order capping symbols and volume. Robinhood's existing stock tokens, launched in Europe in mid-2025 and expanded to more than 120 countries, are structured as debt securities and would not qualify because holders do not own the underlying shares and cannot vote them. Three days before the order, on Sept. 14, Tenev said in a post on X that "in-kind redemption and voting are coming for Robinhood Stock Tokens," and Johann Kerbrat, who runs Robinhood's crypto business, called the exemption "a signal that tokenization is ready to come to the United States." Robinhood's equities transaction revenue jumped 95% year over year in the second quarter to $129 million, accelerating from 46% growth in Q1, while total revenue rose 32% to $1.31 billion and net income grew 48%.

Bitcoin Tops $84,000 for First Time in Eight Months After Clarity Act Fails Senate Vote

Bitcoin broke above $84,000 for the first time in eight months early on Monday, rising 4.87% to $84,194.91, even after the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act failed its procedural Senate vote last week. The bill fell short of the required 60 votes after Senate Democrats blocked its advancement over lingering concerns about government ethics provisions and presidential conflicts of interest, with a handful of Republican defections further crippling its momentum following intense lobbying from community banks over stablecoin reward rules. Among the biggest pre-market movers in the crypto patch were Strategy, Coinbase, Circle, and Robinhood. Strategy CEO and bitcoin bull Michael Saylor said in an X post that the rejection of CLARITY marks a positive inflexion point for digital assets.

Visa Moves to Close Meme Coin Credit Card Rewards Loophole

Visa is moving to close a loophole that let meme coin purchases made with its credit cards earn ordinary credit card rewards. According to a source familiar with the matter, the workaround allowed meme coin purchases processed through the crypto payments infrastructure firm Crossmint to be coded as "digital goods media," a category typically used for e-books, movies and music, rather than as crypto transactions. The move follows a Block investigation finding that users of the Robinhood Wallet and Fomo apps could buy meme coins with credit cards through Apple Pay or Google Pay without completing a separate KYC process, with test purchases powered by Crossmint and made with both Visa and Mastercard cards coded as digital goods media. Chase told The Block that one Visa transaction had not been flagged as a cryptocurrency purchase, had been assigned the wrong merchant category code and should not have earned rewards, and the bank opened a case with Visa challenging the classification, while the New York attorney general's office said it was aware of and reviewing the matter. In correspondence reviewed by Crypto In America, Visa told at least one industry participant that the digital goods media merchant code is not appropriate for meme coin purchases, and has informed payment processors including Checkout.com that the code will no longer be accepted for those transactions, with a grace period expected to end next week. Going forward, the purchases must be processed as crypto transactions and will be subject to Visa's corresponding rules and restrictions.

SEC Grants Five-Year Innovation Exemption for Tokenized U.S. Equities, Lifting Robinhood and Coinbase

The SEC announced a five-year conditional Innovation Exemption allowing eligible platforms to trade tokenized U.S. equities without standard exchange registration, sending shares of Robinhood up 7.6% and Coinbase up 10.5%. According to Reuters, the temporary framework lets digital asset brokerages and trading platforms support tokenized equity trading while the agency solicits public comments to shape permanent regulatory policies for on-chain securities. Tokenized equities represent traditional corporate shares as digital tokens on a blockchain, potentially enabling 24/7 trading, fractional ownership, and more efficient settlement. The move reduces compliance hurdles and waives full exchange registration requirements for qualifying participants, opening the door for platforms like Coinbase and Robinhood to launch new asset offerings and capture additional trading volume. The rally was further supported by a rebound in the broader cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin trading up roughly 2% near $78,000. Coinbase remains down 17.7% since the start of the year and trades at $194.63 per share, 49.7% below its 52-week high of $387.27 from October 2025.

SEC Opens U.S. Path for Tokenized Stocks Under Five-Year Exemption

The Securities and Exchange Commission's Sept. 17 Innovation Exemption creates a five-year, conditional pathway for certain tokenized U.S. stocks to trade on blockchain-based Tokenized Securities Venues, a framework that could benefit Robinhood Markets. The exemption permits trading through permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools, but requires tokenized shares to give holders the same rights and privileges as conventional shares, including dividends and voting rights, while issuers can block third-party tokenization by objecting within 30 days of receiving notice from the trading venue. Robinhood cannot simply bring its existing Stock Tokens to the United States, since the company describes them as tokenized debt securities backed 1:1 by underlying shares that provide economic exposure rather than legal or beneficial ownership and are unavailable to U.S. residents. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has said the company plans to add one-for-one share redemption and voting rights after AMC CEO Adam Aron criticized the Stock Tokens for lacking traditional shareholder rights, though the SEC's allowance for issuer objections diverges from Tenev's stance. Coinbase Global is the most direct rival given its U.S. stock-trading business and international tokenized-equity efforts, while Intercontinental Exchange is developing a 24/7 digital venue for tokenized equities through the NYSE. Robinhood's first-half 2026 revenues climbed 24% year over year to $2.38 billion, earnings rose 23% to $1.00, and the company ended August with 28.6 million funded customers and $384 billion in total platform assets, up 26% year over year.

SEC Grants Five-Year Regulatory Exemption for Tokenized Equities, Deepening Integration of Digital Assets and Traditional Markets

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced on the 17th that it will exempt certain securities regulations to allow the offering of blockchain-based "tokenized equities" and similar products. The SEC will exempt platforms that intermediate trading in tokenized equities from many of the securities exchange rules that apply to Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange and others for five years. It will also exempt operators that supply liquidity to tokenized equities from dealer registration requirements for five years. Platforms must notify a company before tokenizing and listing its shares, and if the issuing company objects, the platform cannot handle the tokenized shares. "Synthetic" tokens, which provide investment exposure to specific stocks through derivatives and other means, will not be permitted. SEC Chairman Atkins said, "The innovation exemption is intended to resolve the issues that have prevented responsible innovation from taking root in the United States, while at the same time ensuring standards for investor protection and market integrity." Major cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and others have indicated they plan to offer tokenized equities in the United States once regulations are in place, and several companies including Robinhood and Kraken already handle tokenized equities, but only for customers outside the United States.

Bitwise CIO Says Bull Market Won't Collapse Even If Clarity Act Fails

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer of crypto asset manager Bitwise, wrote in a blog post on September 16 that the failure of the Clarity Act, after the U.S. Senate voted 49 to 50 against cloture on the motion to proceed, is not a roadblock but merely a temporary slowdown. Passage required 60 votes. Hougan pointed to bitcoin's rise from $57,950 on July 1 to more than $80,000 on September 4, even as the probability on Polymarket of passage this year fell from 39% to 14%, noting that Wall Street's entry continued during that period, including Robinhood's launch of its own chain and Morgan Stanley's rollout of a Solana exchange-traded product. He said that through 2029, a crypto-friendly U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission can lead rulemaking, and CFTC Chairman Mike Selig said on the 16th that the agency is ready to publish rules.

Circle Launches Its Own Blockchain 'Arc' as 10 Billion ARC Tokens Issued in Initial Supply

Circle, the major US stablecoin issuer, announced on the 16th that it has launched the mainnet of its proprietary blockchain platform, Arc. The underlying Layer 1 network uses the stablecoin USDC for gas fees and is designed to finalize payments in under one second, connecting to more than 20 other blockchains through Circle's own protocol. Eleven major financial institutions and companies, including BlackRock, DTCC, and Visa, have joined as validators. Circle revealed that by the 16th it had issued the entire initial supply of 10 billion ARC tokens, the token used on Arc, within the United States. Circle is the first publicly listed company to issue a new Layer 1 network token, but the move does not guarantee that ARC will be made public or listed; it is described as a technical milestone in the process of aiming to migrate from proof of authority to proof of stake by 2027. Major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, and OKX already support Arc, and Coinbase and others are expected to follow soon. Robinhood, the US securities app, also stated on the 16th that it will support USDC deposits and withdrawals on Arc, with support set to begin in the near future.

US appeals court blocks Kalshi sports event contracts tied to two California tribes

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has blocked Kalshi from offering sports event contracts tied to the lands of two California tribes, Reuters reported. The court said the contracts violated the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and the gaming ordinances of the Blue Lake Rancheria and Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians. The ruling also marks a setback for Robinhood Markets, which stands to lose substantial business if it cannot route customers' event contract orders through Kalshi, according to the newswire.

Robinhood Falls 5% After Prosecutors Charge Two Ex-Engineers Over Crypto Trades

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have charged two former Robinhood engineers with front-running crypto listings, sending Robinhood shares down 5% to $105.1 and Webull shares down 9% to $7.92. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced charges against Hefu Chai and Huaisong Xiang, each facing one count of violating the Commodity Exchange Act; prosecutors allege the two bought perpetual futures tokens on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid ahead of Robinhood's public announcements that the underlying tokens would be listed on Robinhood Crypto. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said each is alleged to have profited more than $50,000. Robinhood itself is not accused of wrongdoing, and the sell-off reflects broker-specific regulatory and reputational risk rather than a broader crypto move, with the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF down 0.6% to $42.86 and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust up 0.4% to $760.33. Coinbase, Strategy and Robinhood Edge Higher After Senate Blocks Clarity Act

Coinbase Global shares rose 1% to $174 in early Wednesday trading even after the U.S. Senate rejected cloture on the Clarity Act, the digital-asset market structure bill, by a tally of 50 in favor and 49 against, short of the 60 votes needed to advance. Four Republican senators joined Democrats in voting against the measure, which the president had publicly backed and which the crypto industry spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying to pass. Strategy stock climbed 1% to $130.66 and Robinhood Markets rose 0.57% to $111.08, with both names having already priced in a defeat before the vote. The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF slipped 0.2% to $43.03 while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust gained 0.35% to $760.03, leaving the Bitcoin proxy lower even as crypto equities and the broad tape traded green. Connecticut and Michigan Curb Robinhood Sports Event Contracts

Connecticut ordered Robinhood and eight other platforms to immediately stop offering sports event contracts to residents, issuing nearly 30 subpoenas in its broader investigation, while Michigan secured a court-approved September 4 agreement under which Robinhood halted new sports-related event contracts by September 9 and must close remaining customer positions by October 9. Connecticut said the products violate gaming and unfair-trade laws and warned non-compliance could trigger civil or criminal penalties, noting a federal judge ruled in August that sports event contracts were illegal unlicensed gambling not shielded by federal commodities law. The Michigan restriction covers contracts traded on CFTC-regulated designated contract markets, including Kalshi and Robinhood-backed Rothera. The timing matters because Robinhood generated $156 million of event contract revenues in the second quarter, up more than 10-fold year over year and above equities revenues of $129 million and crypto revenues of $100 million, with event contract volume of 13.6 billion in the second quarter and August volume of 4.7 billion, down 23% sequentially but still 15 times year-ago levels. The two-state pullback will not derail Robinhood's nationwide push, but additional state restrictions could limit market access, increase compliance costs and temper sports-driven growth, leaving regulatory uncertainty an overhang on the revenue stream until the federal-state jurisdiction dispute is resolved.

Two Robinhood Engineers Charged With Fraud Over Insider Information

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has charged two Robinhood employees with fraud. Robinhood engineers Hefu Chai and Huaisong Xiang face commodities fraud and wire fraud charges arising from a scheme to misappropriate confidential business information from their employer. According to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, the two had access to nonpublic information about whether and when Robinhood would support additional cryptocurrencies for trading on a subsidiary digital asset trading platform, and that information was allegedly used to trade perpetual futures on the decentralized derivatives exchange Hyperliquid. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said the charges make clear that corporate insiders cannot evade the securities and commodities laws by trading on misappropriated information in derivatives such as perpetual futures, tokenized securities, or other similar financial instruments.

Robinhood to Add Redemptions and Voting Rights to Tokenized Stocks

Robinhood Markets says it will offer share redemptions and voting rights on its tokenized stocks, a move that comes as the online brokerage faces mounting criticism over its plans to put U.S. stocks on blockchain rails. "In-kind redemption and voting are coming for Robinhood Stock Tokens," CEO Vlad Tenev said in a social media post on Sept. 14, and the company later said it is actively working on redemptions for shares 1:1 with voting for eligible Stock Token holders. Robinhood has come under fire from movie theatre chain AMC Entertainment, which has called on the brokerage to stop offering a tokenized version of its stock, saying it never approved the tokenized version and that token holders lack the rights of other shareholders. Providing in-kind redemptions would let investors exchange a tokenized stock for a corresponding share, while voting rights should help ease investor concerns and give tokenized-stock holders the same rights as other shareholders. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global is also adding voting rights to its tokenized stock offerings, and its tokenized equities already support one-for-one redemptions with traditional shares.

DraftKings and Flutter Jump After Ninth Circuit Rules Prediction Markets Are Gambling

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that sports-related event contracts offered by prediction-market platforms are sports bets rather than swaps under federal commodities law, clearing the way for Nevada to apply its gaming regulations to them. Shares of DraftKings Inc. gained up to 10% and Flutter Entertainment plc rose up to 8% on August 28 following the decision. The court denied requests for injunctive relief from Kalshi, Crypto.com, and Robinhood, all of which had sought to block the Nevada Gaming Control Board from shutting down their sports-related event contract offerings in the state. Prediction-market platforms and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have argued that such contracts fall under exclusive federal jurisdiction as swaps, while 44 states have countered that the products are sports betting disguised in financial terms and should face the same state-level gambling regulations as licensed sportsbooks. The ruling reduces a significant structural threat to DraftKings and Flutter, though Kalshi's September 9 petition for rehearing and any eventual Supreme Court review remain key developments to watch.

Trump Weighs Ethics Compromise Ahead of Senate Crypto Bill Vote

President Donald Trump met with advisers Friday to discuss ethics restrictions that could be added to a sweeping cryptocurrency bill facing a pivotal Senate vote next week, Politico reported late Saturday, citing two people familiar with the meeting. The closed-door discussion focused on language under consideration for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, though the identities of the participating advisers and Trump's response to the proposal were not disclosed. The Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote Tuesday, and the measure will need enough support to overcome that hurdle before lawmakers can debate amendments or move toward final passage. Democrats are pressing for provisions that would restrict senior government officials from issuing, promoting or profiting from digital assets while in office, demands aimed partly at addressing concerns about potential conflicts involving the Trump family's cryptocurrency ventures. Patrick Witt, a senior White House cryptocurrency adviser, appeared optimistic about the negotiations in a Saturday post on X, suggesting that pessimism about the bill's prospects may be misplaced. The vote represents a potentially important catalyst for Bitcoin, Ether, other digital assets and crypto-linked stocks, as the Clarity Act is intended to establish clearer boundaries between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission while creating federal rules for exchanges, token issuers and decentralized-finance platforms.

Prediction Markets Brace for NFL and Midterm Election Supercycle

Prediction markets are entering their biggest fall yet as the NFL season and the midterm election campaign converge for the first time, a combination platforms are betting will drive further mainstream adoption. Daily notional trading volume is now consistently in the billions, with two dominant incumbents and a host of smaller exchanges chasing market share. Kalshi posted a record $2.3 billion in volume traded on Saturday, the first day of college football, while Polymarket debuted an advertisement featuring LeBron James, Eli Manning and Derek Jeter and unveiled a new product for its U.S. exchange. Rothera, a joint venture between Susquehanna International Group and Robinhood, saw volumes boom after going live in time for the FIFA World Cup, and ProphetX co-founder and CEO Dean Sisun said its revenue doubled from June to August and he would love to see it grow four to five times by year-end on a run-rate basis. Both Polymarket and Kalshi suffered glitches as college football play began, with Polymarket's U.S. platform down much of Saturday and refunding accounts that took losses, while Kalshi prematurely resolved a University of Michigan market before correcting the result and paying out accordingly. The platforms are leaning into sports even as they battle in court with states that argue sports-related event contracts amount to gambling and should fall under state rather than Commodity Futures Trading Commission purview.

Tokenized Stocks Monthly Trading Volume Tops 1 Trillion Yen for First Time, Binance Research Finds

Binance Research, the research arm of crypto exchange Binance, published a report on September 11 stating that monthly trading volume in tokenized stocks reached 7.9 billion dollars in August, or about 1.185 trillion yen. That marks a more than 33-fold increase over seven months from 237 million dollars in January, and it is the first time monthly trading volume has surpassed 1 trillion yen. The market capitalization of stock tokens in circulation also rose from 965 million dollars at the start of the year to about 4 billion dollars as of September 9. Trading volume is concentrated in services with existing customer bases: Binance's stock token BStocks and Robinhood accounted for 82.3% of the research coverage in August, up from 0.8% in June, and reached 87.8% month-to-date through September 9. Use in decentralized finance is also advancing, including borrowing funds against stock tokens as collateral, with assets under custody in DeFi rising from 21.6 million dollars at the start of the year to 289.1 million dollars on September 9. Binance Research notes that market competition is shifting from token issuance toward circulation and utilization.

Robinhood Targets Half of Revenue From Abroad and Institutions

Robinhood Markets is pursuing a strategy centered on expanding access to financial asset ownership, with priorities spanning active trading, broader consumer financial services and international infrastructure, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Vlad Tenev said during a discussion hosted by Goldman Sachs. Tenev reiterated the company's longer-term goal for half of its revenue to come from outside the U.S. and half from institutional customers, and said tokenization could accelerate progress toward those targets. Robinhood Chain, the company's tokenization platform, offers roughly 200 tokenized U.S. stocks, called stock tokens, that Tenev said are backed one-to-one and available in more than 120 countries outside the U.S., with additional assets planned. He said recent activity on the chain has included billions of dollars of daily trading volume and gross revenue that reached as high as $6 million in a single day, though he declined to annualize that figure. Tenev also described wealth management as an expanding opportunity, pointing to managed accounts through Robinhood Strategies, human advice through TradePMR, banking products, credit cards and retirement accounts, and said the company expects more than $100 trillion in wealth to change hands from older generations to younger generations over coming decades. Robinhood is serving as the initial broker and trustee for Trump Accounts, which he described as accounts intended to allow children to invest in an S&P 500 exchange-traded fund, with accounts for children born in 2025 receiving a $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Treasury. The company is also broadening its agentic-trading tools, which let artificial-intelligence agents connect to a customer's Robinhood account through an interface known as the Robinhood MCP, and plans to announce additional active-trader products at an event in Houston later in the month.

Jim Cramer Highlights Robinhood's Youth Market Dominance as Analysts Raise Targets

Jim Cramer spotlighted Robinhood Markets' generational grip on younger investors during the September 8 episode of Mad Money, noting that three quarters of its clientele are under 45 years old with a median age of 35. Cramer cited deposits growing at a 28% clip and 28.4 million funded customers, figures that reflect a structural advantage traditional brokerages have struggled to capture. As of the second quarter, total platform assets reached $369 billion, driven by record net deposits of $21.7 billion, while the Robinhood Gold subscription service surpassed 4.8 million subscribers. On September 8, StoneX analyst Mark Palmer initiated coverage with a Buy rating and a $170 price target, and on September 9, Mizuho raised its price target by $10 to $140 while maintaining an Outperform rating. The article also flags bear-case risks including exposure to retail trading activity, regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets and payment-for-order-flow economics, and a valuation of 44.6 times forward earnings, while noting that 87 hedge funds held a stake in the second quarter and short interest stood at 4.24% of float.

Robinhood Stock Tokens Face Regulatory Scrutiny as AMC CEO Objects

Robinhood Markets' push into tokenized equities is drawing fresh scrutiny after AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron objected to a Robinhood-linked token referencing AMC shares without the company's approval, while Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defended the structure, saying companies do not control third-party products that reference their shares. The dispute matters because tokenization is central to Robinhood's international expansion strategy: its new Stock Tokens, issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, cover more than 190 U.S. stocks and ETFs and are available through Robinhood Wallet in more than 120 countries, while the company separately offers more than 2,000 Classic Stock Tokens to eligible European customers with 24/5 trading. Robinhood's filings state that Stock Tokens are tokenized debt securities providing economic exposure but no legal or beneficial ownership or voting rights, are not registered under U.S. securities laws, and are restricted in markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Robinhood has acknowledged that the Securities and Exchange Commission could assert jurisdiction because the referenced assets are U.S. securities, and the Bank of Lithuania has sought clarifications on its European tokenized-stock offerings. With more than 1 million international funded customers, $384 billion in platform assets and 28.6 million funded customers, regulatory friction is likely to raise compliance costs and delay execution, though it is unlikely to derail HOOD's broader growth.

Robinhood Chain hits record with $900 million in assets, but stock tokens hold just $150 million

Assets held on Robinhood Chain, the proprietary blockchain run by major U.S. online brokerage Robinhood, have reached about $900 million, hovering at a record high. Roughly two months after it went live on July 1, decentralized exchange trading volume hit about $11.1 billion over the past seven days, up more than 30% week over week, and on September 1 fee revenue logged a record $3.75 million, surpassing Ethereum itself and the layer-2 network Base. Yet although the chain was built to tokenize real-world assets such as stocks, the money actually flowing in is going to meme coins and stablecoins, with assets deposited in stock tokens amounting to just $150 million, a tiny fraction of the chain's total. In the stock token market, Ondo Finance leads with about $957 million, followed by Binance's bStocks at about $622 million and Kraken-owned xStocks at about $600 million, with these three firms accounting for roughly 77% of the market. Robinhood's share price rose about 36% in August and stood at around $111 a share as of September 11.
