Millions of cameras, sensors, and AI that reads video in real time are becoming the "senses" of the modern city. They get an ambulance to the scene faster and let a police body camera hold officers accountable — but the very same technology, slid to the other end, becomes facial recognition and mass surveillance. This is the most ethically "sensitive" segment of the smart city — and that tension is the whole story.

New iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Are First Apple Devices on Anterix 900 MHz Private Networks
Anterix announced that the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo are the first iPhone models to operate on dedicated private LTE networks using Anterix 900 MHz spectrum. The two models bring iPhone connectivity to dedicated private wireless networks running on band 106 licensed 900 MHz spectrum, giving critical infrastructure operators another device for field communications, operational applications, video, situational awareness and other mission-critical activities. Carlos L'Abbate, Chief Technology and Engineering Officer of Anterix, said an iPhone used every day by millions of people can now operate on the same private 900 MHz network infrastructure that supports mission-critical operations, calling it another clear sign that dedicated private wireless networks are becoming mainstream communications platforms. With iPhone now supported on Anterix 900 MHz Band 106 networks, operators can incorporate a widely used mobile device into the same dedicated network infrastructure supporting specialized devices and operational systems across their environments. Motorola Solutions Wins US$139 Million Louisiana Public Safety Contract
Motorola Solutions has secured a US$139 million, 10 year statewide public safety technology contract with Louisiana covering multiple agencies. The agreement expands Louisiana's existing land mobile radio network partnership to include body cameras, evidence management tools and smart radios, spanning mobile video, digital evidence, command center software and radio infrastructure. The rollout adds real time situational awareness platforms and language translation capabilities for frontline personnel, and reinforces Motorola Solutions' role inside statewide programs such as the Louisiana Wireless Information Network, which supports over 109,000 users across multiple public safety agencies. The company said the deal lines up with its existing focus on multi year infrastructure refresh cycles, including D Series upgrades and a shift toward software and services. Investors will watch how management frames the deal and related public safety demand at the Truist Technology Symposium on 15 September 2026 and the Piper Sandler Growth Frontiers Conference on 16 September 2026.
Samsara now expects a thinner free cash flow margin and a fatter operating margin for fiscal 2027, as the company pays upfront for the IoT hardware that carries its AI subscriptions. The CFO said Samsara buys the devices upfront while revenue comes back ratably over the customer contract, and the company cited the IoT devices that faster growth needs, inventory it is prebuying as a buffer, and higher supply chain costs in the second half of fiscal 2027. Free cash flow margin is guided about 100 basis points below fiscal 2026, which on the $2.04 billion of revenue guided for fiscal 2027 works out to roughly $20 million, while the non-GAAP operating margin guide rose to 21% from 20%. More than 20% of Samsara's net new contract value came from emerging products in each of the last three quarters, and deals with a top-five U.S. city included more than $2 million of emerging products in fiscal Q2 2027. NHTSA Opens Safety Probe Into Tesla's Driverless Cybercab
NHTSA has opened an investigation into Tesla's Cybercab after the company began offering rides in Austin, Texas, according to reports from WSJ and Reuters on September 4. The agency will examine the technical data and methodology Tesla used to self-certify the two-seat vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel, pedals, accelerator, and mirrors, and will assess whether Tesla correctly determined that certain federal safety standards do not apply to it. Tesla has not sought an exemption for the Cybercab, unlike Amazon's Zoox, which received an exemption in July for its steering-wheel-free robotaxis. NHTSA could require recalls or impose fines if it finds the Cybercab noncompliant. Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered in Texas as of Friday, including 45 Cybercabs, as it begins expanding the robotaxi service.

Nokia launches Cognitive Operations AI and edge platform for mining, public safety and defense
Nokia has launched Cognitive Operations, a new commercially available platform that unifies mission-critical communications, accelerated edge computing and operational AI in a single field-deployable system, initially targeting the mining, public safety and defense markets. The platform gives operational teams real-time site and asset intelligence through AI-agentic assistance, a live 3D digital twin of operations, real-time video analytics, predictive maintenance and autonomous safety monitoring, and it can be deployed on-premises or hosted on the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. At the edge of the platform sits Nokia's Cognitive Edge Node, a rugged network and edge compute platform with embedded on-device GPU-accelerated computing that brings intelligence to field-deployed vehicles and remote locations; Nokia collaborated with Rajant to integrate its InstaMesh technology directly into the Cognitive Edge Node. Cognitive Operations launches with three vertical applications: CO for mining, its flagship product for the mining industry, available on-premises and on-cloud through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace; CO for emergency services, which introduces the Vehicle as a Node concept so that police cars, fire trucks and ambulances self-organize into a distributed field intelligence network; and CO for defense, which extends the platform to the battlefield edge for sensor fusion, video analytics and threat detection across 5G, tactical radio and satellite. Lelio Di Martino, General Manager of Cognitive Operations for Nokia, said the launch extends AI directly into the field, and Ildefonso de la Cruz Morales, Senior Principal Analyst at Omdia, said the convergence of AI, edge computing and mission-critical communications is becoming a key requirement for organizations seeking to improve operational performance and worker safety.

AT&T and Ericsson Test 5G Drone Sensing, Pointing to Future 6G Uses
AT&T and Ericsson completed a live test of advanced 5G network sensing for drone detection, using existing infrastructure with AI-driven algorithms to detect, locate, and track drones in real time. The trial targeted integrated sensing and communications, a capability often linked with future 6G concepts, and showed how AT&T's network could support security and monitoring uses beyond traditional mobile and broadband services. By using Ericsson's Massive MIMO radios and AI-enabled sensing algorithms on current towers, AT&T demonstrated how its infrastructure could help venue operators, airports, and public agencies detect and track drones at 300 to 400 feet without adding separate radar systems. The work aligns with AT&T's narrative around converged connectivity and could represent an additional optional service line over time, though turning demonstrations into contract-backed services will likely require capital, sales effort, and regulatory coordination. Investors may watch for signs that these trials turn into repeatable offerings, such as commercial agreements with stadium operators or city agencies.
