South Korea's Central Bank Warns Leveraged Chip Stock ETFs Risk Adding to Market Volatility

Summary · why it matters

South Korea's central bank has called for greater monitoring of overseas derivative products linked to South Korean semiconductor stocks, after these products grew rapidly and could add to volatility in the domestic financial market, particularly when hedge funds employ high levels of leverage. A semi-annual monetary policy report submitted to parliament on Thursday said that the unprecedented volatility in the Kospi index between January and July was driven significantly by the concentration of the South Korean stock market in semiconductor shares, portfolio adjustments by foreign investors, and the build-up and unwinding of leveraged positions domestically. Overseas hedge funds contributed to the volatility by building large positions in South Korean chip stocks with borrowed money, or leverage, before rushing to unwind them during the sharp stock market slump in July. The central bank cited the example of the US-based Situational Awareness fund, which focuses on artificial intelligence investments and was reported to have used leverage of as much as four times in building and reducing investments in memory chip makers worldwide. The warning comes as demand surges for overseas investment products linked to South Korean chip stocks. A US-listed BlackRock South Korea equity ETF, with SK Hynix accounting for roughly a quarter of its portfolio, saw record inflows of 2.8 billion dollars in just one week in July, while the market value of Hong Kong-listed leveraged ETFs referencing Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix surged more than twentyfold in the first half of the year, reflecting the rapid popularity of products that amplify returns through leverage. The central bank said global banks that enter into Total Return Swaps with ETF managers to hedge must buy and sell South Korean stocks in the actual market, as well as futures and options, which could further amplify volatility in domestic share prices. This risk became clear in July, after a single unusual transaction in SK Hynix shares triggered the forced closure of positions worth nearly 60 million dollars in overseas crypto markets. Although the central bank did not identify this as a direct example in its report, the incident underscores the risks from the growing interconnectedness between South Korean chip stocks, ETFs, derivatives, and overseas financial markets.

DA Davidson Raises Micron Price Target to $3000 on AI Memory Demand

DA Davidson lifted its price target on Micron to $3000 from $2100, citing the memory-chip maker's growth prospects as AI drives demand for memory. The $3000 target implies about 195% upside from Micron's shares, which were trading at $1018 before the bell on Wednesday. Analyst Gil Luria said Micron is on a growth trajectory for the next 3-5 years that the market has not yet acknowledged, and the brokerage expects memory demand to exceed supply in 2027 and 2028. DA Davidson values Micron at about 19 times its fiscal 2027 earnings estimate and reiterated its Buy rating, noting that longer-term supply agreements with customers should make the business more predictable and that demand is coming from the largest companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, and Apple. The firm also said de-specing, or chipmakers' use of less memory per AI processor, should not necessarily weaken Micron's outlook, since using less memory could reduce AI system performance and eventually push customers to buy more. Micron shares have risen 266% this year.

Netlist Shares Jump 17.9% on Micron Patent Settlement Worth $600 Million

Netlist, Inc. shares soared 17.9% to close at $6.66 after the company disclosed a settlement with Micron that resolves all pending legal proceedings between the two firms. Under the deal, Micron receives a five-year license to Netlist's patent portfolio, including server DIMMs and High Bandwidth Memory technologies, and will pay Netlist $30 million every quarter from the fourth quarter of 2026 through the third quarter of 2031, totaling $600 million over the five-year term. Micron also agreed to purchase 10 million Netlist common shares for an aggregate of $1 million, subject to a lock-up and phased release schedule over five years. The Micron agreement follows Netlist's August announcement of a five-year strategic alliance with Samsung covering patent cross-licensing, DRAM and NAND supply, and settlement of all pending litigation, under which Samsung will also buy 10 million Netlist shares. Netlist is expected to post quarterly earnings of $0.60 per share, a year-over-year change of +3100%, on revenues of $308.6 million, up 630.8% from the year-ago quarter, while its consensus EPS estimate has remained unchanged over the last 30 days and the stock carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Micron Reaches Netlist Patent Settlement as Taiwan Workers Back Strike Vote

Micron Technology has reached a major patent settlement with Netlist that includes a multi-year license for key memory technologies, resolving longstanding litigation between the two companies over intellectual property used in Micron's memory products. Separately, workers at Micron's critical Taiwan facility have backed a strike action that could affect production during strong AI-related demand. The Netlist settlement supports Micron's advanced DRAM and high bandwidth memory roadmap from an IP standpoint, while the Taiwan labor threat could turn tight supply into an operational risk if output for AI data center clients is interrupted. The clearest proof point will be Micron's next detailed operational update, especially whether management keeps its fiscal 2027 capex and first quarter 2027 revenue guidance of about US$61.5b intact while outlining how Taiwan production plans and labor relations are being stabilised.

Micron Taiwan workers vote to strike over bonus reforms

Hundreds of workers at a Micron Technology plant in Taiwan have voted to strike after talks with the US memory chip giant over bonus reforms collapsed, their union said Wednesday. Of the 2,258 eligible union members at the Taoyuan plant, 2,012 cast ballots, with 1,994 voting in favour of strike action and 14 against, union secretary Chen Yen-kai said. Micron, which makes around 50-60 percent of its chips in Taiwan, has been locked in talks over remuneration with two labour unions representing 12,000 of 15,000 workers at its Taoyuan and Taichung plants. Taoyuan union head Jerry Lin said no strike date has been set but a surprise strike could be called by text message, and he urged Micron to present a concrete proposal after its board meeting scheduled for October 8 and 9 before the union formally proceeds to a strike. The unions are seeking a one-off bonus of 83 months' salary plus a permanent system allocating 15 percent of operating profits to worker bonuses paid quarterly, rejecting Micron's offer last month of up to 68 months of pay. The Taichung union, representing around 11,000 workers at the larger plant, said its talks with Micron would continue as scheduled despite the Taoyuan strike plan.

ASML Raises 2026 Revenue Outlook to EUR 43-45 Billion on AI Chip Demand

ASML Holding N.V. raised its 2026 revenue outlook to EUR 43 billion to EUR 45 billion as customers increase capacity for advanced logic and memory. The company generated EUR 9.3 billion of revenue in the second quarter, up 21.3% year-over-year, while net income reached EUR 2.9 billion. Management expects EUV system sales to grow more than 45% this year, while memory-related system sales are expected to increase more than 75%. Installed-base revenue reached EUR 2.8 billion in the second quarter, nearly EUR 300 million above guidance, and the company expects that business to grow more than 30% this year. ASML said customers are already planning capacity for 1.4-nanometer chips, while advanced logic and DRAM are both seeing increasing lithography intensity, and Intel is already using a High-NA EUV system on its 18A process to produce some Core Ultra Series 3 processors. Management expects China to account for around 20% of 2026 sales, while restrictions on advanced semiconductor equipment can limit what ASML is allowed to sell into the country, and the stock trades at about 28.9x forward earnings.
